It’s not something anyone likes to think about but there will come a time when Queen Elizabeth II is no longer with us and there are many questions about what will happen after her reign when Prince Charles becomes king.

Because Charles plans to “slim down the monarchy” in a move that will exclude his siblings from public duties, many are wondering if the shakeup could mean someone like Princess Anne will have to give up her Princess Royal title.

What will happen when Queen Elizbeth dies?

Of course, no one knows how the queen will die but as the Guardian reported, the palace envisions that it will go something like this: Her Majesty will be surrounded by loved ones and pass away after a brief illness. The queen’s senior doctor, gastroenterologist Huw Thomas, will be present that day and will be in charge of who can go into her room at which time and what information should be released to the public.

There are also several rules in place that are to be carried out once the queen passes from how long she should be mourned to what should be played on public television. When the time comes, the news will be broadcast immediately unless she dies in the middle of the night. If that happens an announcement will be made early the following morning.

The moment the queen takes her last breath, Charles will be king. However, his official coronation won’t take place until a few months later. The reason is due to the tradition of allowing an appropriate length of time between a monarch’s passing and holding a celebration to crown their heir.

Will Anne lose the title her mother gave her?

While the Prince of Wales will be making some big changes once he ascends the throne, he’s not going to just start stripping everyone of their titles. Besides, Princess Anne’s is one that is held for life.

There have only been seven women with the Princess Royal title since it was introduced in the 1600s. Queen Elizabeth II never had the title nor did her sister, Princess Margaret, because it was held by their aunt, Princess Mary, until her death in 1965. Anne then waited more than two decades before she received the title.

“Princess Anne had to wait until 1987 before her mother, the queen, bestowed the title of Princess Royal on her, even though the title had been vacant since 1965,” said royal expert and author Duncan Larcombe.

It’s highly likely that the next person who will be given the regal title is Prince William and Kate Middleton’s daughter, Princess Charlotte.

The title doesn’t automatically go to her but if her great aunt is no longer alive and William is king, it can be awarded to her.

People noted that if the young royal is given the title she will not be the first Charlotte to hold it. Charlotte, Princess Royal, was the daughter of King George III and she had the title from 1789 to 1828.
