NEARLY two million of the lowest income working households who receive Universal Credit will today benefit from a cash boost.
Here we explain all about the measures to help households.
When will I receive my Universal Credit boost?
The harsh taper rate – the amount of benefits that a claimant loses over a certain threshold – is being cut just before Christmas as Rishi Sunak's Budget surprise comes into force to help those in need of extra funds this winter.
Brits should have received confirmation of their benefits boost in their usual monthly statement.
Half a million people are expected to get the extra cash.
This is thanks to cutting the taper rate down by eight pence a pound.
The first recipients will start getting their increased funds from December 1.,
The rest will receive their instalments depending on pay dates. About two million should get the extra cash before Christmas.
How much will I get in the Universal Credit boost?
The work allowance – the amount of money that you can earn before your Universal Credit payments are affected – will be boosted by £500 per year.
This is only for those that are responsible for a child or have a limited capability to work, with the normal allowance limits set at £335 a month if you receive housing support and £557 if you do not.
The taper rate will be cut by eight per cent for some of the poorest working people in the UK helping nearly two million working families.
It will be a boost to millions who saw their benefits slashed after the pandemic's £20 a week extra cash came to an end.
Households can also get access to a new £500million support fund to help them with essentials.
How can I claim the Universal Credit boost?
Claimants will be notified how much Universal Credit they will be awarded in their usual monthly statement.
The first of those to reflect the changes being issued from December 1.
