Although August is still part of the summer season, it’s often treated like it’s part of the fall—students go back to school, football season kicks off, tailgates commence and Starbucks usually brings back its pumpkin spice latte. However, fall doesn’t officially start until the end of September.

When is the first day of fall 2019?

This year, the first day of fall will take place on Monday, September 23 for those living in the Northern Hemisphere. To get a little more technical, the fall equinox, which marks the official start, will take place at 3:50 a.m. on Monday.

What is the fall equinox?

In short, the fall equinox takes place when the sun is directly in line with the equator. More scientifically, an equinox occurs when the sun’s rays shine perpendicular to the earth’s surface, making a right angle at the equator. This means that the earth is neither tilting toward or away from the sun.

There are two equinoxes each year, the fall equinox and the spring equinox as they’re often called. And when the Northern Hemisphere experiences the fall equinox, the Southern Hemisphere experiences the spring equinox and vice versa.

During an equinox, however, both hemispheres will experience the same amount of daylight, around 12 hours of day and 12 hours of night. 

You may experience some technical difficulties

We hate to break it to you, but in the days following the fall equinox, you may experience slower internet, frozen television screens and static on phone calls. According to National Geographic, this is all thanks to the sun and its position directly over satellites causing what is often called “sun outages.” 

During an equinox, the sun is directly in line with the satellites that orbit around the equator, and they get a surge of solar radiation. This radiation can interfere with the satellites’ signals or even cause signals to stop all together.

Sun outages can also occur in the days leading up to the first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere.
