Back when former President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama announced that they'd be partnering with Netflix, fans everywhere were hoping to see exactly what they had in mind. And now, there's finally a trailer for Michelle's documentary, Becoming.
Mashable notes that the documentary will give viewers an inside look at Michelle's 34-city book tour. After the release of her memoir, Michelle crisscrossed the country (and the globe). In Netflix's first look at Becoming, she's in Philadelphia speaking to a woman who's ready to start the next chapter in her life.
The new documentary comes from the same team as Netflix's other blockbuster releases American Factory and Crip Camp. Becoming is directed by Nadia Hallgren, a documentarian known for projects such as She's the Ticket and House of Z.
Along with the trailer, Michelle released a statement expressing her gratitude for Hallgren and imploring viewers to take the time and find something hopeful even though many are dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic.
"I treasure the memories and that sense of connection now more than ever, as we struggle together to weather this pandemic, as we care for our loved ones, tend to our communities, and try to keep up with work and school while coping with huge amounts of loss, confusion, and uncertainty," the statement reads. "It's hard these days to feel grounded or hopeful, but I hope that like me, you’ll find joy and a bit of respite in what Nadia has made. Because she’s a rare talent, someone whose intelligence and compassion for others comes through in every frame she shoots. Most importantly, she understands the meaning of community, the power of community, and her work is magically able to depict it."
Hallgren also released a note, Variety reports, explaining that it wasn't easy to film a woman who's always flanked by Secret Service agents. However, she adds, there was a bond formed between herself and Michelle — and that's not something she'll ever forget.
"She moves quickly and I had to learn to move with her — I filmed in tight, private spaces in a way that required the smallest possible footprint, but also allowed me to build a close relationship with her," Hallgren's statement reads.
Becoming will premiere on Netflix on May 6.
