Tater Tot came into the care of Ash Houghton when he was just a day old. Sharing the adorable kitten on Instagram with 22,400 followers, he has shot to fame, winning hearts from every corner of the globe.
“Tater Tot was born with all four of his legs malformed and a cleft palate,” the 34-year-old, from Utah said. “Tater Tot recently had splints, or ‘bonkers’ as we’ve been calling them, on his front legs to help straighten them out.
“The bonkers did a great job on those limbs, and we are planning on adding bonkers to his rear legs in a few weeks. We are currently doing stretches on his back legs to help prepare for those splints.”
The ginger kitten had to spend weeks with his tiny legs in mismatched leg casts – referred to as bonkers, due to the way he walked with them on. Ash, who runs the Kitty Crusaid rescue charity, has been documenting the 5-week-old kittens’ progress online.
Sharing Tater Tot’s story on Instagram (@ourfosterbabes), he has drawn the attention of many pet lovers, increasing donations to the charity and leaving people even drawing fan art. One video, showing the kitten off to the world, gained over 1.2m views, 224,000 likes, and hundreds of comments.

”We have had so many unbelievably talented artists draw him up and many have donated their artwork to be used in Tater Tot merch, and all profits from this merchandise goes directly to the rescue.
”I could tell the bonkers were driving him bonkers, but he was still a sweet, spunky little guy through the whole process.
”He worked really hard to figure out how to move with them on, and I think it helped him develop strength in his legs.”
Tater Tot’s cleft lip means that he is unable to feed properly.
The baby cat will need to wait until he is nine months old and strong enough for surgery.
