When it comes to DIY, we’re always looking for ways we can save time and money.

Tiling can be a job that can take hours, even days, and it’s vital to get it right – otherwise you may have to start over.

But it seems there’s an easy technique that can help DIY-ers along – and it involves a slightly different adhesive.

Nik and Alivia Stophel, behind the TikTok account @nickandliv.diy, share how they did their own kitchen backsplash using a double-sided adhesive tile mat – and it took them just a few hours to complete.

They explain that they stuck this mat to their kitchen wall, once they had removed the old backsplash remains – before adding their new tiles.

‘It’s literally like putting on wallpaper,’ says Nik, as he demonstrates in his clip.

‘It’s extremely sticky and it has a lifetime guarantee.

‘We completed this project in just six hours, from start to finish, and that is including grouting, because of this stuff.’

He also says that you can cut around any power sockets with a utility knife.

‘When I say the tile sticks right on, I literally mean it,’ he adds in his video.

The pair can then be seen adding white tiles on top of the sticky mat and adding spacers to keep borders for grouting.

‘This was our first time using it and we were extremely impressed,’ he adds.

The pair used a diamond blade to cut any tiles to size – to go around the edges and outlets – and say this was the only time-consuming part.

Nik adds that once you put your last tile on, you can grout immediately – which is another element that saves time.

‘I used a sponge and some pre-mixed grout and I was able to finished that in about 45 minutes,’ he continues.

In total, the project required just over 100 tiles, which he says cost around £80, as well as caulk on the bottom edge to create a waterproof seal.

They then replaced the outlets and switches to match the new design.

But, overall, the DIY project saved them a considerable amount of money.
