Idina Menzel, 52, forged her career on Broadway in the likes of Rent and Wicked, but also on screen in Glee.
But it was playing Elsa in Frozen that catapulted her to fame — singing Let It Go at the Oscars and the Super Bowl.
She’s released seven albums, including her latest, Drama Queen. Idina lives in Los Angeles with her second husband, Aaron Lohr, and her son from her first marriage.
Try to ignore social media noise
My parents were very supportive of my dreams to be a performer. I grew up in New York and was always singing around the house.
My mum tried to instil in me that I shouldn’t worry about what people think of me, but I’ve sort of failed when it comes to that. It’s only just starting to hit now I’m in my 50s.

I was 26 when I first got a job on Broadway with Rent. Since then, I’ve had lots of ups and downs in my career.
Having my son, Walker, now 13, has helped. When I’m performing I like singing a song for him, and the idea that I’m not in front of an audience of scary people puts me at ease.
When Frozen came out ten years ago, it changed my life in so many ways. But I’m still not impervious to what people say.
I’ve never liked to read reviews and I try not to read too many comments on social media, but I also want to feel connected to the fans. I don’t know if there’s anyone that doesn’t care what people think; it’s a rarity.

The wonderful thing about Frozen is the way it connects with young people. The love in the story is about family and sisterhood and not about a man.
People always ask if I get tired of singing Let It Go and I don’t, because of that connection. Having to sing that every night is a reminder to myself to practise what I preach. That’s been the greatest gift to me.
My new album, Drama Queen, is inspired by wanting to give a positive take on that phrase; to embrace my individuality and who I am.
Frozen was one of the great roles of my life, but it’s also meant it’s harder to show other sides of myself. But the older I get, the less I care about that and I just want to live my life authentically.
