Although non-essential shops, pubs, and hairdressers have reopened, as well as the fact that more than one household can meet up outdoors, rules in supermarkets have not changed. The UK’s major supermarkets are still following strict Government guidelines. What are the rules?
People can now meet up in a group of six or with members from two different households, but only outside.
The rules for indoor spaces have not changed, and these include supermarkets.
Supermarkets are encouraging customers to shop alone if they can, or with members of their household.
What are the specific rules for each major UK supermarket?
Tesco
Tesco has encouraged customers to shop one person per trolley to limit shopper numbers in store.
The supermarket has also asked customers to only shop when they need to.
In a statement, Tesco said: “Please shop alone unless you’re a carer or with children.
“We also encourage you to shop only when you need to, in line with Government guidance to stay at home.”
The supermarket has introduced a traffic light system to reduce and monitor the number of customers entering.
Sainsbury’s
Sainsbury’s also has measures in place to limit the number of customers entering the store.
Like Tesco, it has encouraged shoppers to shop alone, saying: “To help manage the number of customers in our stores, you must shop on your own.”
The supermarket added that it will “challenge customers who are shopping in groups”.
Customers must still wear face coverings when entering Sainsbury’s and any other supermarket.
Aldi
Aldi stores have social distancing measures in place and are still asking customers to shop alone if possible.
The supermarket said earlier this year: “We are encouraging all customers to try and reduce the number of family members they bring with them into our stores.”
Aldi’s stance on this rule has not changed even though non-essential shops have now reopened in England and Wales.
Children are permitted to shop with parents or carers.
Morrisons
Morrisons announced earlier this month that it would ensure its stores “don’t become too busy”.
Like other supermarkets, the retailer has encouraged customers to shop “with as few people as possible” and to continue adhering to social distance guidelines.
Official Government guidance outlining the rules when it comes to indoor spaces said: “You must not meet indoors with anybody you do not live with, unless you have formed a support bubble with them (if you are eligible), or another legal exemption applies.”
However, Britons are permitted to meet up to six people or two different households outside, as well as in outdoor seating areas of pubs and restaurants.
