After the nation was forced into homeschooling their children during the pandemic, parents were given a taster of what the experience is like.

However, some famous faces made the decision to educate their children at home long before any school closures took place.

From Loose Women star Nadia Sawalha to Canadian popstar Alanis Morrisette, some celebrities have made the decision to teach their offspring themselves for a variety of different, personal reasons.

Let's take a look…

Stacey Solomon

Loose Women star Stacey Solomon homeschooled her two eldest sons, Zachary and Leighton.

When both boys reached secondary school age, they joined mainstream school and Stacey shared an emotional post on her Instagram page.

"I've had the most amazing two years with you. Home education has been all that I imagined and so much more. It wasn’t always easy but it was always rewarding," she shared.

Samantha Womack

Frustrated with the lack of flexibility to travel during term time, EastEnders star Samantha Womack decided to homeschool her daughter Lily.

The actress argued that experiencing other cultures "was just as important" as learning other subjects.

Speaking on This Morning, she said: "Children are creative little human beings and sometimes travelling to other countries for families that couldn't afford to travel any other way is just as important as algebra."

Nadia Sawalha

Loose Women presenter Nadia Sawalha took her two daughters out of their private school education after realising her youngest daughter was struggling to cope with the academic pressure.

She has since said that Maddie and Kiki-Bee are "excelling" learning at home.

The 57 year old says that her children have grown in confidence and made more progress outside mainstream school.

Will and Jada Pinkett Smith

Jada and Will homeschooled their children Willow and Jaden back from 2003 after realising they wanted to direct their learning.

Speaking on Live with Regis and Kelly, Will said: "We found about eight or nine other parents that home-school, so we put the children together. There are just very powerful educational concepts that we believe in, and we feel like we want to design the system that revolutionizes public education."

The move also meant a flexible schedule which fit around the children's performing jobs.

Jennifer Lopez

Jennifer Lopez has admitted that she faced criticism after choosing to school her twins Max and Emmie at home.

In an interview with Fox 5 New York’s Rosanna Scotto, Jennifer said: "Everybody’s like, ‘You should have them in school, they need friends.’ It drives me – it can drive you crazy.”

The singer added: "They are super happy, well-adjusted, loving, caring kids, and that’s the most important thing."

The twins did eventually attend a mainstream school for their secondary education.

Alanis Morrisette

Canadian popstar Alanis Morrisette says that she 'unschools' her three children after removing them from mainstream learning.

“Unschooling, for me, is child-led education,” she recently told Health.com. “So if there’s some agenda like, ‘Let’s play with these magnet tiles,’ and my daughter is like, ‘F–k those tiles. I want to put glitter on that thing and cut the tree and put the thing,’ boom — we do that.”

“I basically get inside their eyeballs,” she said. “I’m constantly watching their eyes and what they’re pulled toward, and then we do the deep dive.”

“My husband and I create pods all over the house — here’s where the spelling area is, and here’s where the fake animals are,” she explained. “There’s probably a better definition of unschooling, but there’s no rigidity to it.”
