Twitter didn’t exactly love The Little Mermaid Live!, but Shaggy’s Sebastian costume was a particular low point in the production. Rather than one of the elaborate crab outfits the show’s designers were clearly able to produce, Shaggy just wore… a red leather jacket and pants. And Twitter didn’t take kindly to the choice.
You’d think the costume team would’ve at least dressed his hands in something that resembled a crab’s claws, but nope. Instead, Shaggy wore fingerless red leather gloves with the all-red ensemble that weirdly mimicked Michael Jackson’s "Thriller" music video look. Fans also made comparisons to Britney Spears and Eddie Murphy.
"Did they really just put this man in a thriller jacket and red fashion nova jeans to make him Sebastian?!," @Carlynnn_ on Twitter wrote. Auliʻi Cravalho’s Ariel got a functioning tail — why didn’t Sebastian? He’s a crucial mentor who nearly saves her life, after all.
Ashley Anne, a reporter for WDBJ7 News in Roanoke, Virginia, was one of few to defend the artist’s outfit. "For those who don’t get it, @DiRealShaggy isn’t in costume because he’s a recording artist only (& one of the best)," she tweeted. "He makes the perfect #Sebastian!"
A few others joined in support. "Shaggy doesn’t need crab claws to make Sebastian sing," @tdelmonaco76 tweeted. @Chrisohdub called him "perfect."
He debuted the monochromatic look with his performance of the movie’s iconic track "Under the Sea." And when he stepped onstage again to perform "Kiss the Girl," he wore the same clothes.
Another Twitter user compared it to a last-minute Halloween costume. "Shaggy’s costume is like kid says he wants to be Sebastian for Halloween on Oct 30 and mom tears through her closet to unearth an ill fitting mashup of stuff from the time she wanted to be Michael Jackson in college," @SporksOfFury wrote.
Who knows, Shaggy might be able to repurpose it for his own street style. It really is that wearable.
