British singletons are now waiting until date number 12 before having sex, a new study has revealed.

Singles in East Anglia will wait five dates on average before going all the way, but Londoners are now holding off sex twice as long, according to the poll by dating app Happn.

The poll compiles results from 1000 single men and women across the UK who revealed their dating habits.

According to the study, men will wait an average of 11 dates before uttering the words "I love you" while women will wait till date number 12.

And chivalry is not dead just yet – almost half of men still believe in ladies first (49 per cent), opening car doors (46 per cent) and 47 per cent even insist on paying the bill.

However, 37 percent of single women still say the bill should be split versus 19 percent of men – but thirteen percent said whoever suggested the date should cover the cost.

Meanwhile, a fifth of men said they were indifferent – a lower 15 per cent of women said it didn’t make any difference to them.

But the survey found men also still like to take the lead in pursuit. Nearly two thirds (64 per cent) prefer to make the first move, versus 29 per cent of women.

While men are more relaxed on this rule in cyberspace with only 24 per cent saying that men should start conversations after a match on a dating app, women are more old-fashioned with more than four in ten (41 per cent) preferring men to take the lead.
