The Duchess of Cornwall has won over the public ‘magnificently’ and will celebrate her 75th birthday with a ‘small family party’, according to Sarah Troughton, one of the Queen’s cousins and a friend of Camilla’s.
Sarah, the Lord Lieutenant of Wiltshire, 69, appeared on Good Morning Britain today ahead of ITV’s documentary Camilla’s Country Life and said: ‘I defy anybody not to be charmed by a smile from the Duchess.’
Elsewhere on Lorraine, a new clip from the programme, which airs this evening, shows the royal walking one of her Jack Russells while explaining her love for swimming in the ‘English sea’.
‘I love swimming, and I love English sea. I don’t mind the cold, we were so used to it when we were children, it doesn’t bother me, after the initial horror of stepping in and gasping. You feel so much better when you come out,’ said Camilla.
BAFTA-winning director Michael Waldman who made the ITV special also appeared on the morning TV show to discuss making the documentary.
He revealed how Camilla is ‘very authentic’ and most likely wants to receive better circulation figures of her guest-edited Country Life issue than her husband Prince Charles did.

Sarah, the Lord Lieutenant of Wiltshire, 69, appeared on Good Morning Britain today ahead of ITV’s documentary Camilla’s Country Life and said: ‘I defy anybody not to be charmed by a smile from the Duchess.’
In a clip from the documentary, Camilla can be seen walking one of her pet dogs, while being asked: ‘Are you much of a swimmer?’
She replies: ‘I love swimming, and I love English sea… I don’t mind the cold, we were so used to it when we were children, it doesn’t bother me.
‘After the initial horror of stepping in and gasping, you feel so much better when you come out, it’s a lovely feeling, you feel completely invigorated.’
Asked ‘Do you take your swimming costume everywhere you go?’, she responds: ‘Try. Not that I can swim in many places.’
Speaking about her 75th birthday, Camilla’s friend Sarah, who has lived in Wiltshire for nearly 40 years and known the royal for nearly all that time, said a ‘small family party’ would be taking place and that she had bought a ‘modest gift’ for her pal.
Asked about the Duchess, Sarah said: ‘I don’t think there’s much that will surprise you, all I can tell you is that she’s the nicest, kindest, most amusing friend one could possibly have, to all generations, that includes our children.
BAFTA-winning director Michael Waldman (pictured) who made the ITV special also appeared on Lorraine to discuss making the documentary
‘I do work with her professionally as Lord Lieutenant in the county and it’s no surprise, but she’s extremely good at her job, I can’t reiterate that more strongly and she does everything with such style and panache and a certain charm.
‘… If the public needed winning over, and they possibly did, some years ago, I think she’s done that absolutely magnificently.
‘And I think there are certain people in the country that possibly don’t agree with the institution as a whole, but I defy anybody not to be charmed by a smile from the Duchess.’
The Duchess is the cover star of the Country Life magazine after asking a photographer she knows well to take the image – the Duchess of Cambridge
Meanwhile, director Michael said it was ‘extraordinary’ to spend time with Camilla as she guest-edited the magazine.
‘It was fascinating,’ he said, before commenting on Camilla and Prince Charles’ competitiveness.
‘She’s quite discreet about it, but it’s quite clear they’re quite competitive and she is keen to see if she can beat his circulation figures. She’s very authentic, she comes across as someone who’s real.’
Prince Charles guest edited an edition of Country Life magazine to mark his 72nd birthday.
