All we knew before now was that season three of Westworld would launch sometime in 2020. Now, HBO has given us an exact date along with a new trailer.

The first season of Westworld was a groundbreaking success. Bending fans’ minds and finishing with a terrific finale as HBO took us into its fictional world where residents of the real one go to escape the tribes and tribulations of modern life. Season two then went even deeper, detailing the rise of the AI living in the park as they became self-aware and plotted their revenge.

Some were left so confused by season two that they might have had to watch it more than once (definitely us). Others were not impressed by the elaborate plot. Either way, the vast majority of Westworld fans have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of season three. Especially since it has been almost two years since the end of season two.

All we knew before now was that the third season would be coming at some point in 2019, perfectly vague. Thanks to an unannounced surprise trailer from the show’s creators dropping we now know so much more. An exact date, for starters. Season three of Westworld will begin on March 15, 2020, which means we only have a little more than two months to wait and rewatch seasons one and two.

As for what we can expect from season three, that’s still not entirely clear. What the trailer does finally highlight is when in time the show takes place, way off into the future in 2058. The trailer details why the human race is looking for an escape in the form of Westworld, highlighting events that happen between now and 2058 at which point we’re assuming the AI escapes the park and goes to war with humankind.

The circular timeline even includes a couple of events that have already happened, including the political unrest in Hong Kong and the impeachment of the US President. That doesn’t bode well for whoever is president of the United States in 2024 as the timeline predicts he or she will be assassinated. If Westworld becomes real and we do find ourselves at war with artificial intelligence by the 2050s, you can bet your house we’ll be rewatching the show for tips on how to win.
