Prince Charles’ engagement to Lady Diana Spencer was announced by Buckingham Palace in 1981. And on the day of the announcement, the couple took part in a special interview which some say was one of the first signs the couple’s marriage would end in divorce. Diana would later describe the interview as “ghastly”, according to the documentary Diana: In Her Own Words.
The British public had waited a long time for Prince Charles to find a wife.
So when the Prince, then aged 32, proposed to Lady Diana Spencer in 1981, royal fans were delighted with the news.
Over the years, cracks in the couple’s marriage began to show, ultimately culminating in divorce in 1996.
However, it appears that issues with Charles and Diana’s relationship were evident as early as their first interview as an engaged couple.
Aged only 19, Diana’s body language during her first interview with Charles suggested she wasn’t prepared for what would await her as a member of the Royal Family.
Body language expert Darren Stanton told Coffee Friend: “Princess Diana was first introduced to the public as a young, excitable 19-year-old girl in love with Prince Charles and ready to adopt the royal way of life.
“Following their engagement in 1981, Diana and Charles sat down for their first official interview, and it was clear by the way she acted and by what she said that she was naive to what was to come.
“She appeared to lack knowledge and understanding of what being a royal really entailed, and it turned out to be a life very different from the ‘fairytale marriage’ their relationship was once billed as.”
As well as being unsure of what her royal role might include, Diana’s body language also suggested she was unsure about her impending nuptials.
During the interview, Charles and Diana were asked if they were in love, and Charles’ response has become infamous.
Mr Stanton added: “The most damning part of this interview was when they were asked how this engagement made each of them feel.
“When asked if they were in love, Charles says the phrase, ‘whatever in love means’ and Diana rolls her eyes, trying to play off her disappointment with an awkward face.

“It’s clear that by her reaction, she believed back then that she had concerns and even doubts about their relationship.”
Despite any doubts Diana might have had, she married Charles at St Paul’s Cathedral later the same year and went on to have two sons with him.
But Charles’ “whatever in love means” comment would have a big impact on Diana.
According to the documentary, Diana: In Her Own Words, she said: “We had this ghastly interview the day we announced our engagement.
“And this ridiculous [reporter] said, ‘Are you in love?’ I thought, what a thick question.
“So I said, ‘Yes, of course, we are,’ and Charles turned round and said, ‘Whatever love means.’
“And that threw me completely. I thought, what a strange answer. It traumatized me.”
