SEOUL, South Korea — K-pop boy band BTS has set a new record with its latest single “Butter,” which is now the most-watched music video within 24 hours after its release on YouTube.
More than 185 million people have watched the video since its release on Friday. The upbeat song is the group’s second English single after “Dynamite.”
“There is a welcoming atmosphere around the globe for BTS’s pop music sung entirely in English,” pop culture expert Ha Jae-geun told ABC News. “Their new single shows BTS’s enhanced star quality.”
On Sunday’s Billboard Music Awards, BTS brought home four trophies in the categories of top duo/group, top song sales artist, top social artist and top selling song with “Dynamite.” The hit song made the Billboard Hot 100 chart for 32 weeks in a row.
“We wanted to share some fresh energy with everyone through ‘Dynamite’ and we think this award is proof that we achieved that goal,” member RM said Sunday in his award acceptance speech.
“‘Dynamite’ and ‘Butter’ were crowned as K-pop songs that the international audience can enjoy listening to,” Seoul-based pop culture critic Kim Hern-sik told ABC News. “The gradual recognition of BTS on global stages will bring the group closer to the Grammys.”
The “Butter” music video has also set a record of having the most simultaneous viewers on YouTube Premieres, which means that over 3.9 million fans tuned in for the release of the new song.
