A mum has shared her simple hack for separating egg yolks and whites, and all you need is two bowls and a slotted spoon.

Eggs must be separated for many cakes and desserts such as pavlova, which requires whites to be whipped alone, and carbonara, which requires egg yolks.

Carolina McCauley, from Perth, said she discovered the ‘egg hack’ online, and it uses a slotted spoon to sieve the white from the yolk.

‘The trick works like a charm,’ Carolina posted on Instagram.

To try the trick for yourself, Carolina said all you need to do is get your two bowls and  the slotted spoon, and then crack one egg through the slotted spoon.

The white should sieve through the spoon easily into the bowl, while the yolk remains in or on top of the spatula.

Then, you just need to the lift the spoon with the yolk resting inside it over to the other bowl.

Close to 10,000 people who saw the hack were quick to say they had ‘never thought of it’ and would ‘definitely be using the trick to separate eggs’.

‘Omg this is genius, so clever,’ one woman posted.

Another commenter added: ‘Mind blown’.

Some were skeptical as to whether the trick would work as well if a yolk cracked, but the majority said they were fans of it.

This isn’t the first time a trick for separating egg yolks from whites has gone viral.

Previously, British home cook Callum Gray showed viewers on TikTok how one clove of garlic will put an end to the traditional practice of cracking shells and painstakingly transferring the yolks and whites back and forth until they have separated.

His clip started with a piece of peeled garlic sitting next to an empty mug and a bowl filled with a freshly cracked egg.

The amateur chef rubbed his thumb and index finger on the garlic for a few seconds before pinching the yolk and pulling it apart from the whites as if by magic.

Mr Gray transferred the yolk into the mug without leaving a trace of golden yellow in the whites.
