A mother has warned other consumers about a popular unicorn sheet mask after it left severe burns on her stepdaughter’s face.

Chelsea Anders raised concern over the Yes To Vitamin C Glow-boosting Unicorn Paper Mask ($4) after her stepdaughter experienced burning when using the mask for just two minutes.

‘Her face was welted with red, swollen, itchy raised abrasions and I had first thought chemical reaction,’ Anders told WHO TV.

The sheet mask boasts that it’s certified ‘clean’ at Target stores, and is paraben and cruelty free.

Ingredients in the sheet mask, 96 per cent of which are ‘natural’ according to the packaging, include vitamin C and grapefruit, which work together with the intention to help brighten the skin after wearing on the face for 10 minutes.

Anders and her stepdaughter are not the only consumers who experienced reactions to the sheet mask.

The rating for the product on Target is two stars, with many warning about the dangerous side effects they experienced when using the mask.

‘What a lot of people had assumed when using this product was that it was just an allergic reaction,’ Anders wrote.

‘Then doing the research after I had seen what had happened, it looks like a chemical burn.’

Reviewers complained of similar effects to the product like Anders’ stepdaughter, including redness and swelling.

‘Terrible! I kept it on for about 1 minute before it started burning my skin,’ one reviewer wrote.

‘My face swelled up and got tomato red! It burned my face and water couldn’t help. I ended up with my face covered in milk to stop the burning. It was awful! Do NOT use it!!!! Only Benadryl stopped the burning after over an hour of trying to get it to stop.’

Another Target customer said: ‘My daughter and I chose these masks for our spa night and both of us experienced burning, redness, and hives.

‘Neither of us have had issues with skin sensitivity in the past. Still love [Yes To], but something about this product didn’t work for me.’

People also shared pictures on both Target’s and Ulta’s websites that show the damage they suffered when using the mask. Commenters even implored customers to ask stores to discontinue the product.

Yes To recommends that customers 18 and up use the product, but both children and adults have complained about side effects to the mask.

‘The reviews about children, the same reaction is happening in adults, so suggested ages really isn’t a point,’ Anders told the news organization. Her stepdaughter is under the age of 18.

‘I understand the difference in the skincare, but your target marketing is definitely children, and if you are suggesting 18 and older, why are targeting unicorns at 18 and older?’

Experts recommend that people do a spot test when trying a new mask or skincare product to see if a reaction might occur.

DailyMail.com contacted Yes To for a comment about the backlash over its product.
