McDonald’s is to launch a fully vegan menu for the first time including four veggie dippers for £3.29, or a plant-based Happy Meal for £2.99.
The fast-food giant will introduce the dippers, made from red pepper, rice, sundried tomato pesto and split peas covered with bread crumbs, from January 2 next year.
However, the fashionable options are 20p more expensive than the meat version, with six chicken dippers costing £3.09 and a meat or fish-based Happy Meal costing £2.79.
A vegan meal of four dippers with fries and a soft drink will also be available for £4.99.
McDonalds vegan menu includes a Happy Meal for £2.99 that will include two veggie dippers, a side and water or a fruit shoot. This is 20p more expensive than the meat version. Above are the new veggie chicken dippers with fries and ketchup, which will cost £4.99 when sold together as a meal
The vegetable-based meal options, approved by The Vegan Society, will be prepared in a separate area.
They have been launched following the success of the restaurant’s first fully vegan Happy Meal earlier this year, and after the chain saw an 80 per cent uplift in customer orders for vegan options.
The chain’s head of food marketing for the UK and Ireland, Thomas O’Neill, said: ‘In the last 12 months we’ve seen an 80 per cent uplift in customers ordering vegetarian options at McDonald’s.
‘So, it is time for the brand famous for the dippable McNugget to launch a dippable option for our vegetarian, vegan and flexitarian customers.
‘The Veggie Dippers are a delicious addition to our menu and we’re looking forward to seeing what customers make of our first vegan Extra Value Meal and Happy Meal in the New Year.’
The new veggie dippers are made from red pepper, rice, sundried tomato pesto and split peas covered with bread crumbs and will appear in stores from January 2 next year
It comes after the success of other restaurant chains options including Greggs with its famous vegan sausage roll.
Members of the public went wild for this plant-based meal option, and it was even reviewed by Piers Morgan on television.
McDonald’s, which has been in the UK since 1974, operates 1,300 restaurants across the country and Ireland. It is one of the largest private sector employees, providing jobs for more than 130,000 people.
