With thousands of flammable five-pound frocks ending up in landfill each year, sustainability will soon have to be the new black. Balancing a love for luxury fashion and a willingness to protect the planet isn’t easy; we now know that the textile industry produces 1.2 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide a year and only one percent of clothing is recyclable. Thankfully, however, Lee jeans have a new denim offering that may just be able to turn the tide.

The popular brand have made moves to lessen the impact that these garments have on the Earth by creating a range of jeans that are entirely biodegradable, save for the buttons that which you are able to unscrew and then reuse.

This means that if you outgrow your jeans or or simply wear them out, you can through them in the bin guilt free.

Lee have named the collection ‘Back to Nature’ and the garments are made out of compostable linen which consists of 85% cotton and 15% flax linen. Instead of the leather on the waistband patch the fashion brand uses a faux leather that is made from acrylic polymers and cellulosic fibres which is called Jacron.

The collection includes Rider jacket and jeans for both men and women, the female version of the jacket is belted and the jeans are wide leg.

Roian Atwood, director of sustainability for Lee Jeans and Wrangler told the Standard: "The most critical emerging environmental problem that our industry is going to face is pollution due to the increased amount of synthetics in denim products and the creation therefore of microplastics.

"This polyester sheds and comes off via pilling into very small, tiny pieces into the ambient environment, which is why we are finding microplastics all throughout the globe."
