When thinking of cutting edge procedures in beauty and cosmetic surgery we often look to Essex. The ladies of Brentwood are the height of glamour, with their perfectly manicured nails, golden fake tans and long flowing locks.
It is no secret, either, that the stars have had a little help along the way either by going under the knife or being subject to a needle. However, in the last year or so there has been a shift; the pumped up pouts seem to have depleted in favour of a more natural look. Former TOWIE star Megan McKenna has had her lip fillers dissolved, as have current Essex starlets Shelby Tribble and Olivia Attwood.
However, it’s not just east of London where thinner pouts are framing smiles; across the pond in LA, trendsetter and lip connoisseur Kylie Jenner has also said goodbye to her filler. This is a woman that became the world’s youngest self-made billionaire after starting Kylie Cosmetics. Her meteoric rise began when she launched her Lip Kits, born out her own insecurity from growing up with a thinner pout.
But although large lips may not be massive in the celebrity world anymore, is everyone else following suit? We put the question to Dr MJ Rowland-Warmann, founder of Smileworks Liverpool and she said: “The instance of people seeking to have their fillers dissolved is certainly on the increase. When I opened my practice in 2013 I would dissolve fillers a handful of times per year.

Katie Price, Simon Cowell and Meg Ryan are fans, but what is a Silhouette Soft Lift?
“These days I receive around two referrals PER DAY for complications management (including people who have had fillers placed elsewhere and are unhappy with them).”
She also shone a light on the issue being that many of this is because the fillers were not done to a great standard in the first place. UK law currently allows anyone – whether they're a medical professional such as a doctor or not – to administer injectable cosmetic products.
This lack of expertise can cause complications. For instance in a survey carried out for ITV News, it was found that lip filler errors made up almost 70% of all corrective work and 47% of procedures that led to complaints were carried out by beauticians.
Dr MJ Rowland-Warmann confirms this, saying: “According to Save Face, an organisation set up to promote safety in the aesthetic industry, most dermal filler complications arise due to non-healthcare practitioners treating patients. This means that those without medical qualifications are treating people with fillers without any knowledge of placement, risks, anatomy or how to diagnose or manage complications when they arise.
“A lot of the time patients seek to have their lip filler dissolved because their lips become too big or they are lumpy or uneven. Often, patients will have had their lips treated a number of times by a number of practitioners and over time the lip shape will have been lost and the lips are overfilled.
“What people don't realise is that lip filler lasts much longer than 6 months, so topping up every 6 months will just result in more and more filler accumulating and eventually distorting the shape of the lip. In a recent study carried out in America, dermal fillers have been shown to be persistent in tissues for up to 9 years!”

This was definitely the case with Olivia Atwood, who took to Instagram last year to explain why she had had her lip fillers dissolved, saying: "I’ve been having lip fillers for years, probably five or six years. That lip has started to come out of the lip line and started to look really puffy – something I never wanted, so I’m actually excited to start again fresh.”
As for a more natural-looking lip being back in vogue, Dr MJ definitely agrees. "There is definitely a trend for having fillers dissolved. There has also been much more of a trend for women (and men) to seek much more natural lip enhancements,” she said.
“This means that a lot of people who have historically had their lips over-treated are finding that they no longer find their lip filler aesthetically pleasing and opt to have it removed. If anything, I am seeing more people than ever having lip fillers placed, but the focus is now very much on a natural full lip rather than results which are obviously fake."
