Spoiler alert! The following contains plot details from the “Game of Thrones” series finale, Season 8 Episode 6, “The Iron Throne.”

Jon Snow may know nothing, as Ygritte, his first on-screen love interest was fond of saying, but the actor who plays him was well aware the “Game of Thrones” season finale would have fans up in arms.

“I think it’s going to divide,” Kit Harington told Entertainment Weekly in an on-set interview published after Sunday’s finale, in which Jon killed Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), his queen, aunt and one-time lover out of disgust over her genocidal actions at Kings Landing.

“But if you track her story all the way back, she does some terrible things,” Harington reminded fans. “She crucifies people. She burns people alive. This has been building. So, we have to say to the audience: ‘You’re in denial about this woman as well. You knew something was wrong. You’re culpable, you cheered her on.’ ”

He also seemed concerned that the show would once again be accused of sexism based on the way it handled the final story arcs of Daenerys and her rival, Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey).

“One of my worries with this is we have Cersei and Dany, two leading women, who fall,” Harington told EW, though he argued that killing both was in keeping with the show’s style of storytelling.

“The justification is: Just because they’re women, why should they be the goodies?” he pointed out. “They’re the most interesting characters in the show. And that’s what ‘Thrones’ has always done. You can’t just say the strong women are going to end up the good people. Dany is not a good person. It’s going to open up discussion but there’s nothing done in this show that isn’t truthful to the characters. And when have you ever seen a woman play a dictator?”
