You look like a flag,’ deadpanned my daughter as I left the house in a pair of red trousers, a white T-shirt and a dark blue denim jacket.
It probably didn’t help that I’d finished the look with a pair of white trainers covered with big navy stars.
There are some rather dull reasons why so many national flags (43 apparently) are red, white and blue: something to do with those being the only available dyes way back in ye olden times. But what’s also true is it’s a damn good look.
And it’s exciting times for us RWB fans, as there’s never been a more appropriate time to lean into the look’s patriotic vibes.
When our new King Charles III is crowned on Saturday, I surely won’t be the only one who’ll be looking to match my outfit to the Union Jack bunting at my local street party.

Don’t be fooled by the limited palette; those three simple colours can work in an endless array of combinations. Red, white and blue is always effortlessly fresh. Indeed, fashion relies on it.
Witness American designer Thom Browne’s recent New York show where his signature red, white and blue palette turned up as stripes on a quilted spacesuit.
The star-spangled formula is pretty much solely responsible for making Tommy Hilfiger the unofficial king of Americana — and a multi-millionaire.
My preferred take is ably demonstrated here: simple block colours that are unfussy and modern. If you ditch the more dateable prints, even the brightest jacket, like this Me+Em one, will work for all your post-Coronation needs.
For maximum versatility, not to mention luxe-level chic, you can’t beat a classic white suit, such as this one from Reserved (second from right): the reasonably priced red shoes are a nice quirky full stop.
As for royal blue, it has never looked as glorious as on this showstopper of a dress from Jasper Conran. It’s a lovely nostalgic nod to Dior’s iconic New Look, the classic silhouette so beloved by our late Queen Elizabeth, circa 1950s.
So do it for King and country, yes, but mostly do it for yourself. Because you’ll look fabulous.
