A woman who pledged to take a three-day journey travelling from the south of England to Scotland taking only £2 buses is set to reach her destination today.
Emily Turner, a writer and podcast host from London, has documented her travels from her home city to Edinburgh on Twitter, where thousands of people have followed her journey.
She revealed her mission to travel between the two cities would take three days, involve 16 buses – all of which had to be part of the £2 local government bus programme.
Taking to Twitter to discuss the journey, Emily revealed that she was planning to spend no more than £35 in total on buses, and added that she had pre-booked a train to travel home from Edinburgh on Sunday night. She also noted that she loves buses, and has wanted to undertake such travels ‘for years’.
Before even stepping foot on her first bus, the writer and host of the Roundel Round We Go podcast, about the London Underground, starting gaining followers who were keen to follow her almost 400-mile trek.

The day before setting off, Emily Tweeted: ‘Rather amazed by the 1,200-ish new followers I’ve got for deciding to ride a bunch of buses so can’t reply to anything else. Need to go to bed now so I can get up at 4ish to start riding buses… will update then if you’re an insomniac.’
Since taking to the road on Friday, Emily has shared a range of details from her trip, including her clothing options (like socks decorated in buses), photographs of some of the scenic landscapes she has passed, and the food she’s eaten.
She planned the trip from London to Edinburgh, on which she aimed to spend no more than £35 on travel, to coincide with her birthday.
Musing on the date, Emma tweeted: ‘And that concludes my 35th birthday. When my mother turned 35, she was about to give birth to me, but I feel like today I have given birth to a whole Twitter bus lover community, so to each their own.’
Among some of the trickier situations she has experienced so far while en route, Emily revealed she has come into contact with some seemingly troublesome people.
Taking to Twitter, she revealed: ‘Oh god. Six teenage boys just got on this bus. They all have exactly the same haircut and reek of whatever is the currently trendy equivalent of Lynx Africa.’
While documenting her travels, Emily shared pictures of some of the buses she travelled on, though this wasn’t one of them – rather a photo she took while aboard another moving bus
Meanwhile, she also faced a spot of bother when her card was declined. She wrote: ‘My card has just been declined when I tried to buy lunch. I tried it again and then I said I’d get another card and she wouldn’t even let me use another card. She just looked at me suspiciously and said “it says something very serious on the terminal”.’
Later, she revealed that the issue was due to her making too many Apple Pay transactions in one day.
She wrote: ‘Does my bank think someone stole my card and went joyriding around England… on buses?…I totally appreciate it’s just fraud detection and they’re doing their job and it’s all automated. It just made me laugh. Chatting with bits and/or people at the bank now.’
Among the buses Emily has taken are the N253 to Tottenham Court Road, which was the first she boarded, the N29 to Enfield Town, and the the 313 to Potter’s Bar.

From there, she jumped aboard the 610 dragonfly from to Luton. Explaining the name of the bus, she tweeted: ‘It’s called “The Dragonfly” which I’m reliably informed is because the De Havilland Dragonfly plane would have been built in Hatfield, which it passes through. It has interesting bench seats and chargers!’
As she left the city and started moving through the countryside, she shared images of the picturesque landscapes.
Emily also posted landmarks from some of the towns and cities she arrived in, sharing images from Derby and Barnsley bus station (which she described as ‘incredible [and] post-modern’ among others.
Tweeting this morning about the final leg of her trip, the writer and podcaster revealed she is looking forward to her route.
She said: ‘I’m REALLY excited about today. Not just finishing this challenge, but also because I love the Northumberland coast. I’ve travelled along it by train, car, bike and coach, but this will be my first time going through on a double-decker so I get a higher view.’
