Hairstyles are totally subjective and individual, so if you like wearing your hair in a particular way, just go for it.

However, some hairstyles are better for hair health than others. Angela and Christina, founders of microfibre towel company Turbie Twist, said there’s one hairstyle they tend to avoid.

Scraping your hair back into a tight, high bun or ponytail can look super chic and is practical too, getting your hair out of your face during work or a workout.

But it can be damaging. The hair expert at Turbie Twist said: “Whether we’re hitting the gym, washing our face, or trying a sleek ‘do for a night out, we all have a few tight hairstyles that we love.

“But did you know that a tight hairstyle is one of the common causes of hair loss?

“When your hair is up in a ponytail or held back with elastic, the tension pulling on the hair at the root can lead to permanent hair loss. This is particularly true for long hair styles.”

This doesn’t mean women have to ditch their tight up-dos for good. Switch it up a little, adding new styles to your “everyday rotation” that are a little looser.

For those days a pulled back hairstyle is needed, the hair experts encouraged women to consider how they go about it.

The hair gurus explained: “When you do need to pull your hair back from your face, rethink the headbands and hair ties you are reaching for. Pick styles won’t tug on the hair and cause tension at the root.”

According to Angela and Christina, another hair mistake women make is using too much heat.

While a heated tool can work wonders, creating sleek straight styles and bouncy curls alike, too much heat can wreck havoc.

The experts said: “Using heat strips hair of moisture and makes it more prone to breakage. Excessive heat styling can actually break down the hydrogen bonds in your hair that gives it its natural texture.”

They provided two top tips for the ladies that love the heat. Number one – don’t be too quick to reach for your heated tools. Wait until your hair is completely dry first before grabbing the flat or curling iron.

Number two – let your hair air-dry more often. You don’t have to use heat every day, perhaps just when you’re heading out for the evening and want to look glam.
