She had wealth, beauty, AND an enviable ‘nepo baby’ pedigree… so where did it all go wrong for Tori Spelling? FEMAIL lays bare 50-year-old’s shocking fall from grace as she’s forced to stay in a $100-a-night motel

  • It was revealed this week that Tori, 50, was staying in a roadside model
  • She hails from a successful Hollywood producer and grew up in a lavish mansion
  • The actress has faced a series of blows recently, including marital problems

It was revealed this week that Tori Spelling has been forced to stay in a $100-a-night roadside motel with her five kids – the latest of a series of devastating blows that the former on-screen siren has had to endure lately.

The actress’ current living conditions are a vast contrast to the $155 million mansion that she once called home.

Tori, 50, whose father was one of the most successful Hollywood producers, famously lived in the second largest abode in all of Los Angeles as a teen – a sprawling home that stretches across more than 55,000-square-feet and contains a whopping 123 rooms, including 14 bedrooms, 27 bathrooms, a bowling alley, gift-wrapping room, nightclub, barbershop, and ‘museum’ for her mom’s expansive doll collection.

She grew up surrounded by 20 staff members who waited on her hand and foot, and mingled with Hollywood’s most elite from a young age, having attended a glamorous private school that saw a slew of other stars walk down its halls when they were teens.

As Tori (seen in October) is seen leaving the roadside motel, FEMAIL went ahead and recapped her shocking journey from Hollywood nepo baby to popular starlet to scandal-ridden outcast

She started acting at age six, thanks to her famous father, who hired a private coach for her, and when she was 17, she was skyrocketed into the spotlight after she starred in Beverly Hills, 90210, which again, was all thanks to her dad – who was producing the series.

So how did Tori go from millionaire heiress and successful actress to living out of meager motel room?

Well, there were many things that contributed to her fall from grace. Perhaps it was the nasty fallout she had with her parents, who were not supportive of her very-public affair with Dean McDermott.

Her relationship with them became fiercely fractured after she left her husband to marry Dean in 2005, and when her dad passed away a year later, he famously only left her $800,000 out of his $600 million fortune.

Her downfall could also be contributed to her ‘bad shopping habits,’ which have lead to the star racking up tens of thousands of dollars in debt and facing multiple lawsuits from credit card companies over unpaid bills.

Her recent marital problems could also be to blame, as Dean recently revealed via Instagram that after 18 years together, he and Tori had ‘decided to go their separate ways.’

Tori’s lavish upbringing: The actress lived in a sprawling mansion with 123 rooms – including 14 bedrooms and 27 bathrooms – and had 20 staff members who waited on the family hand and foot

Tori was born on May 16, 1973, to author, theater producer, and philanthropist Carole Gene ‘Candy’ Spelling, and acclaimed film and TV producer Aaron Spelling,

Aaron (seen with Tori when she was young) was behind some of the biggest titles on the globe – including Fantasy Island, 7th Heaven, Melrose Place, Charmed, and Beverly Hills, 90210

As a teen, she attended an elite, $47,000-a-year private school, called Harvard-Westlake School, which has a slew of well-known alumni including five-time Emmy winner Candice Bergen, actress Jamie Lee Curtis, Emily in Paris star Lily Collins, Bones alum Emily Deschanel, famous siblings Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal, NCIS star Mark Harmon, Carrie Fisher’s daughter Billie Lourd, Broadway actor Ben Platt, actor and writer Jason Segal, and former child star Shirley Temple.

Tori’s family famously owned the second largest home in Los Angeles – a 56,500-square-foot estate that was custom-built for her father in 1988, after he purchased the property (formerly owned by Bing Cosby) for $12 million.

The sprawling mansion, which was dubbed as The Manor (a name chosen by Tori herself) and was located in the exclusive Holmby Park neighborhood, has a total of 123 rooms – including 14 bedrooms, 27 bathrooms, a 20-seat movie theater, gym, bowling alley, game room, nightclub, wine cellar, and barbershop.

It also has a room specifically designed for gift-wrapping and another for flower-cutting, as well as one for that Tori described as a ‘museum’ for her mom’s immense doll collection.

There’s also an entire wing that was dedicated to housing the family’s 20 ‘staff’ members, who waited on them hand and food.

Aaron and Candy originally planned to build a zoo for Tori in the home, but they ultimately decided not to because she was already a teen by the time construction completed.

During an appearance on Jeff Lewis Live in 2021, Tori (seen as a kid with her dad) admitted that living in the massive home came with some downsides. She said: ‘It felt cold all the time’

The lavish home sits on five acres of land, and boasts a tennis court, pool, and four garages – and between those and the expansive driveway, there was room for 100 cars to park.

During an appearance on Jeff Lewis Live in 2021, Tori admitted that living in the massive home came with some downsides.

‘The Manor was beautifully decorated, my mom has impeccable taste – but the rooms were large, and it felt cold all the time,’ she said. ‘Just because physically, honestly, they were too big.’

She explained that they rarely used all of the home, adding, ‘We spent time in the kitchen, the office, my parents’ bedroom, in each of our bedrooms. That’s it.’

The actress spoke about it further on her 90210MG podcast, and she explained that she only actually lived there for two years, since it wasn’t finished until she was 17.

‘I get exhausted very easily … Walking that house was just, phew. Just taking that elevator up to the second floor was like too much to handle,’ she joked.

She recalled her mom, Candy, hosting star-studded parties at the abode, including one that was attended by Prince Charles.

Tori admitted that she was ’embarrassed’ to show people the home because she was often ‘made fun of’ for coming from such a lavish family. She’s seen as a baby with her little brother

‘When I was younger, people would make fun of me for my dad having money. Like that was embarrassing to me, it really was,’ she shared

‘When I was younger, people would make fun of me for my dad having money. Like that was embarrassing to me, it really was,’ she shared.

‘I was so disconnected, it just was an embarrassment, an embarrassment of riches honestly. I didn’t enjoy it because I was just like, no one should have this, this is just crazy.’

Candy eventually sold the home in 2011 – five years after her husband, Aaron, passed away from complications of a stroke – to Formula One heiress Petra Ecclestone for $85 million.

It was sold again in 2019 for $119.7 million, setting a California record at the time, to Canadian billionaire Daryl Katz. It’s currently on the market for $155 million.

She also launched a slew of Oxygen reality TV series alongside her husband, Dean.

In addition, the star has released three autobiographies, launched her own jewelry line, started a podcast with 90210 co-star Jennie Garth, and has served as the host of the makeover competition series The Look: All Stars since 2018.

The affair that tore her and her parents apart: While her career flourished, Tori’s personal life was plagued with explosive family feuds, a failed marriage, and allegations of infidelity

While Tori’s career flourished, her personal life was plagued with explosive family feuds, a failed marriage, and allegations of infidelity.

She tied the knot with actor and writer Charlie Shanian in July 2004 during a million dollar wedding held at the family’s mansion – but after a year of marriage, the relationship came to a screeching halt amid rumors that she had cheated on her husband with Dean.

Tori and Dean met on set of the Lifetime movie Mind Over Murder in 2005, while he was also married to someone else, and she later confessed to having an affair with him – and having ‘no regrets’ about it.

She wrote in her 2009 memoir: ‘It was love at first sight. I fell so hard … Then I noticed he had a wedding ring. And – oh, yeah – I had a husband too.’

She recalled ‘flirting’ with Dean but knowing ‘nothing would happen’ because they were both married to other people.

But one evening, they decided to get dinner and went out to drinks afterwards – and they ended up having sex.

‘The following day when I woke up next to Dean, I had no regrets,’ she wrote. ‘Something was really wrong with my marriage. Not only because I slept with this guy – though that certainly wasn’t a positive sign – but because I didn’t regret it.’

Tori later confessed to having an affair with Dean, and they married within months of her divorce being finalized. She’s seen with Dean in December 2005

She and Charlie separated in October 2005, and their divorce was finalized in April 2006. Within one month, she and Dean got married.

According to the actress, her whirlwind affair tore her family apart because her parents were not supportive of her decision to leave Charlie for Dean.

Her relationship with mother and father became fractured soon after her wedding to Dean.

And when her dad died months later, Tori admitted that while she had ‘reconciled’ with him just before his death, she was not on speaking terms with her mom.

At the time, Candy claimed that their strained relationship had contributed to Aaron’s health deteriorating.

‘My daughter one day decided that she wasn’t speaking to my husband, myself and my son,’ Candy said in an interview.

‘It was sad. That’s what killed my husband, actually. He just didn’t want to live after that.’

In 2009, Candy then shared an open letter to Tori, begging for her to answer her ‘calls and text messages.’

‘You haven’t responded to my e-mails, phone calls and text messages. You say you look at my website, so I’m trying to reach you that way,’ she wrote on her website.

‘I want to see you and your family – in private, like the “normal family” you say [you] always wanted.’

Tori responded during a chat with People, telling the outlet, ‘I, in no way, cut her off. She is welcome to make the effort if she wants to be present in [my kids’] lives. She knows how to reach me, she knows where we live.

‘If she would love to see her grandchildren, she should really make an effort to reach out and see them.’

Things seemed to get better for the mother-daughter duo in recent years, however, because Tori revealed that their relationship was ‘really good’ during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live in 2020.

And in 2022, they shared a photo together for the first time in years, while celebrating Candy’s birthday.

The star has been plagued by money problems for years due to her ‘bad shopping habits,’ facing multiple lawsuits over unpaid bills, and was left only $800,000 out of her dad’s millions when he died

In 2016, Tori (seen months later) was sued by American Express for failing to pay an outstanding credit card balance of $87,594.55

While Tori grew up in one of the richest families on the globe, she claimed that as soon as she was cast on 90210, her parents told her she was on her own financially.

Thanks to the success of the show, it was easy for Tori to get by – but when it came to an end in 2000, she struggled to manage her funds.

She soon racked up tens of thousands of dollars in credit card debt, which she attributed to ‘bad shopping habits.’

‘In all honesty, I grew up a certain way. I never had to worry about money … that was my reality,’ she told Good Morning America.

The actress explained that she refused to ask her parents for money even when she was at her lowest.

‘In my mind, [that would make me] what everyone thought I was – taking money from my dad, the rich little girl that he paid for everything,’ she explained. ‘And I just refused to be that. [I would] rather be bankrupt.’

When Aaron passed away in 2006, Tori only received just $800,000 of the estimated $600 million fortune that was left behind by her late father.

In 2016, she was sued by American Express for failing to pay an outstanding credit card balance of $87,594.55. According to court documents, the money was ‘seized’ from her bank account in 2020.

Tori and her husband were also hit with a lawsuit from City National Bank later that year, who claimed they had ‘failed to repay a $400,000 bank loan.’ That case is still ongoing.

Candy spoke about her daughter’s money problems to the New York Times in 2006, and she said Tori ‘would close a store and drop $50,000 to $60,000’ in one shopping trip, adding, ‘She just went crazy.’

Tori’s fall from grace: The star who once lived in the second largest home in LA is now staying in a roadside motel with her five kids – as her marriage to Dean falls apart

Last month, after welcoming five kids together and nearly two decades of marriage, Dean announced on Instagram that he and Tori had split. They’re seen with their kids in 2019

On top of her financial struggles, Tori’s marriage also started to crumble in recent years.

In 2013, Dean admitted to cheating on Tori while she was ‘at a Christmas event,’ calling his actions ‘disgusting’ during a segment of their reality show. He did not specify who the affair was with.

He then checked himself into rehab to ‘address some health and personal issue,’ and the two ultimately decided to stay together.

‘It’s with great sadness and a very, very heavy heart that after 18 years together and five amazing children, that @TorisSelling and I have decided to go our separate ways, and start a new journey of our own,’ he wrote in a post that was deleted minutes later

In a 2015 interview, he spoke about overcoming their marital problems, explaining, ‘What we went through publicly, I learned a lot, and I wouldn’t do it again.

‘At the end of the day ,we’re together, we’re happy, and we’re working on our relationship. We have a beautiful family and a beautiful life.’

However, last month, after welcoming five kids together and nearly two decades of marriage, Dean announced on Instagram that he and Tori had split in a post that was deleted minutes after.

‘It’s with great sadness and a very, very heavy heart that after 18 years together and five amazing children, that @TorisSelling and I have decided to go our separate ways, and start a new journey of our own,’ he wrote.

‘We will continue to work together as loving parents and guide and love our children through this difficult time.

‘We ask that you all respect our privacy as we take this time to surround our family with love and work our way through this. Thank you all for your support and kindness.’

The family faced heartbreak in May, when Tori revealed that they had been forced to move out of their home after discovering a massive mold infestation that was making her kids ‘so sick’

This week, the former 90210 actress was seen leaving a $100-a-night roadside motel with her five kids – certainly a stark contrast to the luxurious mansion that she grew up in

At the time, a source revealed exclusively to DailyMail.com that Dean had reached his boiling point after bowing down to Tori’s ‘demands’ for so long.

‘Dean has changed and worked very hard to be the husband she needed him to be but she is still demanding and entitled,’ the insider dished. ‘Nothing he does or has done will ever be good enough for her.’

The friend of couple’s said Tori of ‘used their marital problems to stay relevant,’ which took a ‘toll’ on her husband.

According to the insider, Tori had been pushing Dean to secure more roles in order to ‘support’ their family – but was less than thrilled when those jobs forced him to spend a lot of time away from home.

Dean’s professional life has certainly become more demanding in recent years, with the actor landing a major role as Detective Barry Hamm on Canadian TV show Pretty Hard Cases in 2021, before securing a part in the movie My Fake Boyfriend alongside Sarah Hyland and Dylan Sprouse the following year.

The source added that Tori felt like Dean ‘carrying his half’ when it came to parenting their five kids, and that she was forced to ‘raise all their children on her own’ due to his busy schedule.

The family also faced heartbreak in May, when Tori revealed that they had been forced to move out of their home after discovering a massive mold infestation that was making her kids ‘so sick.’

At the time, she said they were seeking accommodations via a hotel, Airbnb, or Vrbo home until they ‘can grasp what to do.’
