You’ll need quite a budget to dress like a Duchess! Kate Middleton wore £103,000 worth of new clothing in 2019 – but still showed her thrifty side by recycling more outfits than ever
- FEMAIL has calculated cost of all the new items Kate wore throughout 2019
- Royal often repeats outfits and rewears pieces, which have been discounted
- Total totted up to over £103,075, largely in part due to nine new designer gowns
- Priciest outfit in February when she donned Alexander McQueen for film awards
From extravagant gala dinners to overseas tours and everyday royal engagements, the Duchess of Cambridge requires an extensive wardrobe that would challenge even the most devoted shopper.
And now FEMAIL can reveal that the Kate Middleton has worn new clothing worth a grand total of £103,075 in 2019, an increase on her 2018 total of £68,334.23, but less than 2017, when she wore new clothing to the value of £119,000.
This year saw a change in style direction for the Duchess’ style, when she turned to former Vogue editor Virginia Chadwyck-Healey while her PA and informal stylist Natasha Archer was on maternity leave.
‘Ginnie’ has been credited with rejuvenating Kate’s wardrobe and moving her away from shift dresses to sleek looks such as a Gucci blouse with wife-legged trousers.
Her most expensive look was a stunning Alexander McQueen gown and new Jimmy Choo shoes at the BAFTA Awards in February, worth an estimated £4,975.
But despite opting for some more expensive labels, the Duchess has been recycling more than ever for royal engagements, wearing head to-toe new looks on just nine occasions.
The Prince of Wales is understood to cover the costs of Kate’s wardrobes for ‘work-related’ engagements through his official household budget, funded by the Duchy of Cornwall, but it is not clear whether the Duchess pays full price for outfits or receives discounts.
Below FEMAIL reveals the new purchases Kate has been sporting on official engagements, only taking into account the value of items that haven’t been seen before in public.
Where outfits have been custom-made for the Duchess of Cambridge, the price has been estimated.
Kate Middleton’s, 37, shopping bill for the year has been priced at £103,075 with the royal adding seven new ball-gowns to her wardrobe (pictured left, wearing Alexander McQueen at the BAFTA British Academy Film Awards at the Royal Albert Hall in February; right, in a Jenny Packham gown in Pakistan in October)
One of the royal’s more expensive outfits came in February during a trip to Ireland when she stepped out in a new items worth £4,590, including a new gown by Missoni costing £1,590 and a new jewellery set worth £3,000
Meanwhile on other appearances, the Duchess has cleverly woven new pieces into her wardrobe (left, wearing a new Gucci blouse with an older pair of Jigsaw trousers and, right, wearing an Erdem dress with a pair of Casteñer Carina style espadrille wedges)
