The Countdown icon has worked in early years education for years and founded the website The Maths Factor. As the coronavirus pandemic forced schools to shut on March 20, except for the children of key workers, many families are now spending their days at home together. This puts unprecedented pressure on parents to take control of their children’s education, a responsibility normally carried out by the school.
To help with this, Ms Vorderman announced that she would be making her £2-a-week maths site free for users during the closure period.
The website features videos, exercises and games to make maths learning fun for under 12s.
However, this is not her first involvement with primary school maths learning – in 2015 she revealed three “very simple” tips that can help a parent support their child’s learning.
Firstly, she explained that young learners really excel in short, sharp bursts.

Just 10 minutes of arithmetic a day, for example, can allow them to practice their skills without getting bored or restless.
Secondly, she emphasised it is “crucial” to reward and track milestones, with gold stars for completing each task for example.
Thirdly, she insisted that it is not just the child who needs support, parents sometimes need it to.
She said: “I know from millions of parents that helping a child with work that you are not necessarily familiar with from your school days can be absolutely daunting and can lead to problems with their learning.”
She explained that there are resources out there for parents to familiarise themselves with the subjects as well.
The TV personality added that it will make it a lot easier to help your child if you understand the content – and there is no shame in needing a refresher.
She concluded: “I hope that these very simple tips will help you to help your child enjoy and to love their education.”
Ms Vorderman, a mother of two herself, has been involved with a number of publications about maths learning as well as her website.

After she announced that The Maths Factor was going to be free during coronavirus school closures, the site was suddenly overloaded with people signing up.
She tweeted: “We’re uploading massive server capabilities, please bear with us.”
On Sunday, she claimed that around a million children had now signed up to the learning site.
Referring to herself as “Aunty Carol” she encouraged more parents to get their free subscription, insisting: “We get tremendous results… giving the ‘superpower’ of maths.”
Ms Vorderman has also donated her private plane to carry personal protective equipment to NHS staff during the pandemic.
She posted a snap of herself next to the aircraft, which she has named Mildred, announcing that it would be used to help the NHS.
She tweeted: “My Mildred and I (my aeroplane N242CV) have had some adventures.
“But I want to tell you that right now she is being used by the amazing people at BAE Systems to ferry PPE to where it’s needed by our NHS around the country.”
