If there is one ‘non-essential’ business people want to see reopen, it is hairdressers. From today, a variety of non-essential shops and services in England can reopen under conditions that they adhere to social distancing measures. So can you know head out for trim or a wash and blow dry?

Are hairdressers open?

Unfortunately, this lifting of restrictions doesn’t include hairdressers.

Clothes, crafts and charity shops are among those reopening from today, as England moves through the coronavirus crisis.

Secondary schools are also opening partially from today, with years 10 and 12 now being allowed some face-to-face time with teachers ahead of GCSE and A-Level exams they will take next year.

Commuters will also have to wear a face-covering or mask on public transport today.

Face coverings can include scarves, a piece of cloth or a mask – and certain travellers, such as young children and people with disabilities or breathing difficulties, will be exempt.

Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are moving at a different pace to England, and are not reopening non-essential retail just yet.

One of the most missed elements of normal life taken by the coronavirus crisis has been hairdressers.

Hairdressers have begged their clients not to administer any home trims or DIY root cover ups to save them the even bigger job when the time comes to open doors again.

All have arrived at the same conclusion – a bad haircut, patchy colours, and uneven fades.

So when can we expect to be reunited with our beloved hairdressers?

When will hairdressers reopen?

Hairdressers will not be able to reopen until at least July, and the earliest they will open will be July 4.

Rumours began circulating that hairdressers could reopen on June 15 according to a report in the Telegraph, however this is not the case.

Foreign secretary, Mr Raab, confirmed hairdressers, pubs and restaurants would have to wait until ‘phase three’, which would be from 4 July at the “very earliest”, to be reconsidered for reopening.

Mr Raab told Sky News’ Kay Burley: “From 4 July, at the earliest, we’ll look at other sectors and that will include hospitality, but it will also include personal care and people like hairdressers.”

So while no set date is in place, as all restrictions depend on whether the measures are being met, there’s still at least a couple of weeks until hairdressers can reopen.

Can I book an appointment?

Major chains such as Toni and Guy have waiting lists in place that they will work through once they have a date for reopening.

Independent salons have their own plans for reopening, so you should check with your local salon if you don’t use a chain.

Most salons have been prioritising those who already had appointments booked prior to closing for the lockdown.
