A blind man has shared the awkward moment he was accosted by a woman telling him to stop staring at her in the gym – not realising that he is blind.

Pete Gustin, an American actor and water sports enthusiast, shared the awkward encounter to YouTube channel to his 1.29million subscribers in a video which has resurfaced online.

In the clip, which has gained more than 3.8million followers, he explained how the woman stormed over to him and angrily told him off for making her gym experience uncomfortable by staring at her and even getting a member of staff involved.

But Pete explained to the woman that he is blind, having lost his eyesight when he was around eight years old. Bizarrely, they still didn't seem to get it.

He explained: "I'm blind. If you know what those two words mean, then you're much smarter than the girl who was screaming at me at the gym.

"I'm standing there doing a tricep pushdown exercise and since I can't see I'm just kind of staring off into space doing my thing. Half-way through a set, I start hearing footsteps that seem like they're coming in my direction getting closer and closer.

"Until all of a sudden, this woman is right up in my face going 'I didn't come here to be stared at.' 'Ohhhh, I'm sorry, I'm blind', I say to her."

The woman then apparently stormed off and returned with a member of staff who told him that he "can't make other members uncomfortable".

Pete then pulls out his ID card to prove to them that he is blind, to which the manager responded: "Okay, but you still can't make other gym members uncomfortable by looking at them."

Gustin rightly seemed like he was in disbelief over the interaction which has also left his fans completely bewildered.

One user wrote: "Guy: I'm blind. Girl: Hello blind, I'm stupid."

Another added: "This is literally harassing someone with a disability. That gym would get a rude awakening with a lawsuit for discrimination and harassment of someone who literally can’t see."

A third commented: "So glad he can laugh about this. I mean the 'I’m blind' statement should have immediately defused the situation."
