At the moment, every interiors Instagram seems to show cub, and shell candles.

Wax shaped like things is having a moment, and there’s an erotic spin to the trend with naked torso candles in all shapes, sizes, and colours.

Going further with this is the Sex Toy Candle Co, who recently launched their range of (as the name suggests) candles that look like sex toys.

After losing her job in travel marketing due to the pandemic, 25-year-old Em Newton from Surrey, founded the business.

She says: ‘I was looking for Christmas presents on Etsy and noticed female torso candles were really popular. I thought, let’s take this a step further.’

‘When I shared my idea, my Mum was skeptical while my Grandad was utterly horrified. My friends, on the other hand, were keen to make preorders.

‘So, I bought a collection of interestingly shaped sex toys and set about learning how to mould candles.’

The result is the current line of soy wax candles that are vegan, sustainably packaged, and shaped like butt plugs and dildos.

Starting from £12, the candles come in pastel colours and four different designs; beaded dildo, bulbous butt plug, spiral butt plug, and the ‘smooth criminal’ dildo.

Em makes the moulds herself and hand pours the candles in her kitchen. She credits her experience in marketing for helping her create a website and sell on Instagram.

‘Since the end of January, I’ve sold around 450 candles and am currently in discussions with a number of online retailers who want to make wholesale orders,’ she said.

‘My customers include everyone from students looking for a novelty birthday gift to Mum bloggers searching for some quirky interior design additions.

‘Even my Dad bought his partner a set for Valentine’s Day and my Step-Dad bought an 8-inch dildo candle for his 78-year-old Mum for Mother’s Day!

‘I’ve also had a lot of support from sex educators and body positive influencers on social media.’

Whilst these novelty gifts can be burned, it’s worth noting that they’re not intended for use as sex toys. As Em clarifies in the FAQs: ‘As tempting as our sex toy shaped candles look, they’re not designed to go inside you.’

Keep your regular toys for sex and masturbation, then show your appreciation to their pleasure-giving ways in your home.

Just put them in your drawer when your grandparents come over.
