A woman's dog had to be put to sleep after eating what vets believe may have been a discarded wrap of heroin.
Five-year-old cocker spaniel Sophie's owners became alarmed when she suddenly began suffering shaking fits.
Fiona Edwards, 45 of Llandudno, Wales, said she and her family are heartbroken at the loss of their pet.
Her teenage son Matthew alerted the family the dog was unwell – sending dad Craig, 51, a disturbing video of Sophie drooling and shaking.
Mr and Mrs Edwards rushed home and took the dog to the vets, the Daily Post reports.
Mrs Edwards said: "Sophie was having a massive seizure. The vets put her under general anaesthetic and her temperature was 41 degrees centigrade so they put her under ice blankets.
"She was absolutely fine when we left. The vet's best guess was that she had eaten something. Sophie would eat literally anything. If you left sock out she would eat it."
Mr Edwards went home to check if there was any clues as to what the dog may have eaten and came across some vomit in the bathroom.
Their other dog Hollie had eaten some of it and was also displaying signs of illness, so Mr Edwards scooped some of it up to take to the vets and took the 10-and-a-half year-old Manchester terrier with him.
"There was foil in among the vomit," revealed Mrs Edwards. "So the vet believes it's possible it was a wrap of heroin or similar drug. We do have a problem in the back alleys with people taking drugs. Needles have been found in the past."
Sophie didn't recover from the shock of what happened to her, said Mrs Edwards.
She added: "Something poisoned my dog. She was a rescue dog and was going to be put to sleep on the day we went to get her.
"The vets said she had been under the anaesthetic too long and basically died of a massive drug overdose. We just don't how whatever it is got into our garden."
The only good news for the family is that Hollie seems to be making a full recovery after having her stomach pumped and is back at home with them.
