The penultimate season of this naughty-vicar whodunit has barely begun, and already big changes are afoot. Hints of a major upheaval are dropped throughout charming Cambridge as Sidney Chambers (James Norton, far too pretty to have ever been cast as a chaste man of the cloth) and detective Geordie (Robson Green) bust a prostitution ring. As always, Sidney’s gnawing unease and soul-searching enhances the murder mystery.

Delightful British historian Bettany Hughes seems like the sort of sagacious travel guide who never makes her travel companions feel inferior. Her soothing voice delivers factoids to accompany the gorgeous visuals of her trip down the Egyptian river. Here, she has departed Cairo for a less travelled stretch of water with an ancient history as a thoroughfare. Along the way she encounters a historian mummifying a pet cat.

This rollicking 18th century romp can’t be accused of sugarcoating the brothel trade, with exploitation graphically portrayed throughout. Yet most of the women of this literally and figuratively colourful underworld seem anything but powerless. Their enterprising spirit and canny methods of using male weakness to their own ends forms much of this storyline, in which Mrs Quigley (Lesley Manville) plays a wonderfully wicked trick on an odious doctor.
