Like the Bride of Frankenstein’s ghost wearing a skinned Yeti! Celebrity stylist gives her VERY scathing verdict on celebs going goth – as Wednesday becomes a hit on Netflix
- Wednesday on Netflix has reignited stylishly sullen goth-girl trend this season
- Victorian-style trend has been seen on the likes of Lily Collins and Lady Gaga
- FEMAIL has found celebrities that have perfected the sultry trend this winter
- However, others looked more like a Halloween nightmare in their outfits
The stylishly sullen anti-hero played by Jenna Ortega in the Addams family reboot Wednesday has ignited a fashion and pop culture marvel.
Celebrities around the globe are rushing to swathe themselves in black gowns in honour of the Netflix series following Morticia and Gomez Addams’ daughter as she starts high school.
Jenna’s off-duty and on-duty Wednesday Addams outfits have made the goth-girl trend one of the biggest for winter, but her spooky style is hard to pull off without looking like you’re off to a Halloween party.
FEMAIL has rounded up those who are gloriously gothic, and the celebs who just look like a nightmare.
For the premiere of Netflix’s Wednesday, Jenna Ortega wore a gothic corset and lace dress complete with black veil
LIZZO
Lizzo’s ornate golden hand-embroidered cape at this year’s Met Gala, although a show stopper, prevented her sultry outfit from becoming truly gothic
The singer wore a black corseted dress with a skirt held together by garters and opted for super long black nails
Lizzo, 34, attempted the gothic trend at the Met Gala earlier this year, when she walked the red carpet in a black corseted dress with a skirt held together by garters.
Whilst the singer’s dress wonderfully sexy and gothic, her Thom Browne golden hand-embroidered cape fell short of the sultry gothic style.
Farrah-May said: ‘The trend also had other celebrities in a chokehold this summer, as the Met Gala provided us with a masterclass in gothcore.
‘Bella Hadid wowed in custom Burberry corsetry and lace, whilst Lizzo proved that black doesn’t have to be boring as she adorned a busty, silk moiré Thom Browne gown – both outfits that would no doubt receive the Wednesday Addams stamp of approval.’
However, Lizzo still managed to shut down the red carpet with the ultimate accessory – a golden flute.
Yet, whilst a flute is not Wednesday Addams, who prefers to play the cello, Lizzo did manage to bring in an extra gothic touch, with super long black nails.
And celebrity fashion expert Miranda Holder commented: ‘Whilst I am loving the theatrical nod here, this outfit does feel more Gandalf than Goth… which could have been what they were aiming for!’
KATE MOSS
Kate Moss posed for another Marc Jacobs campaign, in a moody outfit complete with patent power platforms
Marc Jacobs has signed Kate Moss for yet another campaign, and the iconic model can be seen in a moody outfit complete with black patent power platforms.
In the new images, Kate, 48, revisited one of her most signature looks, from 1999, and dyed her naturally blonde locks pink.
Wearing a patterned top, the catwalk queen models the grey bucket bag as she gazes seductively at the camera.
And whilst, all the ingredients are here for a fabulously gothic look, it falls short of Wednesday’s signature look.
The leggy display is a bit too risque for the sultry teenage icon, and the splashes of colour soften the provocative aesthetic.
Miranda was not keen on Kate’s look and said: ‘The silhouette of this look is effective in the photograph and whilst Kate Moss could usually look good in a potato sack, this hair colour is doing nothing for her at all.
‘The look just screams moody teenager. And the towering heels? As if anyone could walk a single step in them! Reminiscent of a cartoon, and sadly not a good one.’
VANESSA HUDGENS
Vanessa Hudgens, 34, wore a minimalist sheer black bra for the CFDA Fashion Awards in New York last month
Vanessa Hudgens put on a daring display at the CFDA Fashion Awards in New York, last month.
‘Attention grabbing but for all the wrong reasons,’ said Miranda.
‘Vanessa is going for the “only expose one part of you” styling rule, but has just taken it too far.
‘She has the most enviable figure, but the bra is too much… or rather too little. I do like the sheer duster coat though – maybe next time she could actually put it on?!’
The actor, 34, looked gorgeous in a minimalist sheer black bra showing off her toned body.
She completed the look with a floor-length black skirt and off the shoulder sheer white top, with a long train and ribbons.
And whilst her pointed black nails and poker straight dark tresses had the makings of a sultry gothic outfit, it was too racy for Wednesday.
CAMILLA CABELLO
Camilla Cabello turned heads in a striking Victorian-style look for the final of The Voice last week
Camilla Cabello wore a dramatic off-white lace dress with a long train for the final of The Voice last week.
The Cuban-American singer, 25, turned heads in a striking Victorian-style look, which featured sensational ruffles, with a huge black velvet flower neck piece.
However, the singer’s fluffy charcoal and silver cardigan ended the gothic comparison making the outfit more grunge glam.
Her honey-highlighted hair was pulled back into a low bun with spiky pieces left out and loose, straight, face-framing strands styled at the front.
Camilla’s eyelids sparkled with tiny rhinestones positioned across them for a starry look.
Miranda was conflicted on the singer’s look: ‘A beautiful image, but in reality she looks like the ghost of the bride of Frankenstein wearing a skinned Yeti.
‘And that black corsage would just be a magnet for toast crumbs. A firm no-no.’
PARIS HILTON
Paris Hilton channeled Wednesday Adams when she went incognito at Disneyland earlier in the month. The American socialite wore a black braided wig
Paris Hilton channeled Wednesday Addams with black hair braided into two pigtails as she went undercover at Disneyland earlier this month.
But, that was were the comparison ended. The 41-year-old American socialite wore a jet black wig for her trip to Paris.
She also wore a black bucket hat with a Donald Duck sweatshirt, skinny jeans, black platform sneakers, and a black zip-up jacket, a dramatic departure from her go-to wardrobe of sparkles, pastels, and pink.
Miranda described this look as: ‘If Donald Duck went goth… then designed a Christmas jumper… she might as well have dressed up as an emoji!’
She took pictures all over the theme park in her black braided wig, including some of her on rides and others posing in front of a Mickey Mouse Ferris wheel.
AND THE GOTH GIRLS WHO GOT IT RIGHT…
JENNA ORTEGA
Jenna Ortega outside Good Morning America in a fabulous tailored off-duty Wednesday look, complete with a floor-skimming tailored black coat
Jenna Ortega has the advantage of playing Wednesday in the Netfilx Addams Family reboot.
Off screen she has been seen out and about in tailored black pieces, complete with a white shirt, tie and suit, giving a subtle acknowledgment to her on-screen uniform.
However, it is that long floor-skimming black coat that gives the whole outfit a real gothic edge.
During world premiere for the series, the 20-year-old actor stunned in the ultimate Victorian inspired corset and lace dress, complete with black veil.
Jenna’s stunning dress featured a large split up the leg and full skirt and train. She wore some killer black patent platform Mary-Janes and opted for sultry smokey eye make up.
Miranda explained: ‘The aesthetic has its roots in rock music, giving it a perennially cool and gritty edge to the wearer and the colour black is associated with luxury, sophistication and strength, making it fashion’s power colour.
‘If goth did Negligee. Janna taps into the 90’s underwear as outerwear slip dress trend here by giving it a goth girl edge. It’s an interesting twist on the evening look and far more rock chick.’
BELLA HADID
Bella Hadid, walked the Versace SS23 runway show during Milan Fashion Week in a deep purple, gothic inspired wedding gown
Earlier this winter, Bella Hadid walked on Versace’s Spring/Summer 2023 runway show during Milan Fashion Week in a deep purple, gothic inspired wedding gown.
Miranda said: ‘The rich purple elevates this look into something iconic. The lacework adds luxury, the fingerless gloves and veil a theatrical touch to create a head turning look.’
The 26-year-old model’s purple dress featured a structured strappy bodice and floral appliqués.
Complete with a thin veil, the Versace outfit encapsulated the stylish gothic trend, which has steamed ahead since the release of the Wednesday series.
The dress featured multiple high leg slits, giving way to more lacy embellishments, the skirt consisted of a crumpled and gathered flowing fabric finished with ruffled hems.
KENDALL JENNER
Kendall Jenner wore a romantic gothic Raodarte satin gown with lace detail for a night out in LA last week
Proving that a black dress never fails, supermodel Kendall Jenner stepped out in a romantic Rodarte satin gown, with lace detail last week.
In true gothic style the dress included a plunging V-neckline and princess-worthy puffy cap sleeves.
The 27-year-old was on a night out in LA when she wore the sultry gothic satin gown, complete with pointed sling backs.
Keeping her look slick and stylish, Kendall pulled her hair back into a low bun and opted for winged black eyeliner.
Farrah-May commented: ‘Following the series release last month, fashion’s It girls have been taking a leaf out of Wednesday’s book.
‘Namely supermodel Kendall Jenner, who was recently seen in a silk-satin and lace Rodarte maxi gown, featuring sleeves that undeniably resembled those seen on the iconic dress Wednesday wore to her prom in the series. Who said all-black was a safe option?’
While Miranda explained: ‘The sharp, scraped back hair, puff sleeves and glittering diamond necklace give this look a touch of contemporary luxe.’
LILY COLLINS
Lily Collins nailed the gothic-girl trend when visiting The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. The Emily in Paris star wore a Dior mid-length dress with a netted veil headpiece
For the press tour of Emily In Paris, series 3, Lily Collins stepped out in a wonderfully gothic black mid-length dress with lace detailing.
The 33-year-old actor wore Dior dress with opaque tights and Christian Louboutin heels teamed with Cartier’s Clash de Cartier necklace.
Fashion expert Miranda Holder said: ‘Lily shows us that no matter which trend you are tapping into, great tailoring will always make an outfit look glamorous. The headpiece gives all the Audrey Hepburn vibes.’
In true gothic style she opted for a netted veil headpiece and painted her nails black.
The star of the hit Netflix show was visiting ‘The Late Show With Stephen Colbert’ at the Ed Sullivan Theater.
Her spooky style was completed with a hint of red eye shadow and dark sculpted brows.
LADY GAGA
Lady Gaga perfected gothic look to perform the iconic Wednesday Addams dance, with braided hair and a lace blouse
Panning up to the rest of her outfit, Gaga wore a white lacy high-neck blouse with a black blazer and matching black shorts. Her makeup was smokey and dramatic, as she dragged the dark liner away from her eye and added a dark gloss to her lips
‘Proving that Goth fashion doesn’t have to feel “heavy.” [Lady Gaga’s] broderie anglaise gives this outfit a softer look and the shorts lend a playful feel to the aesthetic,’ said Miranda.
Lady Gaga perfected the Victorian-style look to perform the iconic Wednesday Addams dance, with braided hair and a lace blouse.
The singer, 36, is known for her kooky outfits and outlandish dance moves, and went viral with the spooky character’s choreography.
Captioned ‘Mother Monster has arrived’, the short video showed Gaga, whose real name is Stefani Germanotta, getting made up to look more like Wednesday.
She slipped on a pair of vintage platform black leather heels with some Argyle socks underneath.
Panning up to the rest of her outfit, Gaga wore a white lacy high-neck blouse with a black blazer and matching black shorts.
Her makeup was smokey and dramatic, as she dragged the dark liner away from her eye and added a dark gloss to her lips.
