More like “Sex and the Thrifty.”
Filming on HBO Max‘s much-anticipated reboot of “Sex and the City” is in full swing, with returning leads Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis taking to the streets of NYC in character — and giving us a glimpse at what to expect sartorially from the new series.
But while the “And Just Like That…” wardrobe looks to be peppered with plenty of style Easter eggs, from Carrie Bradshaw’s beloved Manolo Blahniks to that iconic purple sequined Fendi Baguette, there’s one major fashion change afoot.
On Tuesday, Sarah Jessica Parker was snapped shooting on the Upper West Side in a paisley-printed maxi dress from fast fashion giant Forever 21 — a far cry from her character’s usual favorite retailers, like Bergdorf Goodman and Barneys.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, “Sex and the City” fans weren’t sure what to make of the star’s discount duds. “She’s meeting Natasha dressed like that?!” one incredulous Instagram user commented on @justlikethatcloset‘s post about the look.
“Oh I’m hating these outfits it’s not even near the league it was before,” another opined, while a third simply wrote, “Carrie would NEVER.”

Others called for the return of original “Sex and the City” costume designer Patricia Field, who passed the torch to her protégée, Molly Rogers, for the reboot.
But a few jumped to the dress’ defense, pointing out the character’s well-documented love for a high-low look.
“It is definitely so Carrie to pair a $7 dress with $400 heels,” one commented, while another quipped, “OMG something I can afford? Here for it.”
Much has been made over the years about Carrie’s inexplicably expensive lifestyle, including a closet overflowing with dresses from Dolce & Gabbana and Dior along with $40,000 worth of designer shoes; not exactly realistic for a freelance newspaper columnist living in Manhattan.
So perhaps after decades of living beyond her means — and with a leaked script hinting at a split with Mr. Big — our curly-haired heroine’s finally single, fabulous … and frugal?
