A social media user has gone viral after claiming to have found a hidden staircase behind a bookshelf in his parents’ bedroom. 

Imgur user TwoBiteBrownie, from Missouri, explained that he had been wrestling with his brother, when the pair fell into the shelf – and discovered it was loose.

Shockingly, the duo say they discovered a staircase leading to a dead end – but say there was a ‘crawl space’ with recent ‘evidence’ of a squatter behind the walls.

Sharing a chilling picture of a narrow corridor behind the shelves, the Imgur user wrote: ‘So we went down… bad idea’. 

The next image shows a tightly-wound iron spiral staircase, contained between four walls. 

And the next, most chilling, picture sees a small space at the end of the staircase, containing a blanket, some dolls, discarded wrappers and a key.

The poster claims the sweets belong to him, implying that someone has been staying in the hidden space and coming out to steal food.

Sharing a chilling picture of a narrow corridor behind the shelves, the Imgur user wrote: ‘So we went down… bad idea’.

The user goes on to say that the police are looking into the finding while the family stay with friends.

The post attracted thousands of comments, but many social media users questioned the validity of the post, and argued that the police wouldn’t ‘waste their time on a case like that’.

Elsewhere one wrote: ‘Bull***t. How does he get in and out? Where does he s***? When does he eat? No way there was a person living in there.’

Another added:  ‘There must be an outside entrance too! Surely they dont enter through the bookcase each time?’ one said.

However others were shocked by the finding, with one writing: ‘Such a creepy thing to happen!’

Another added: ‘I was expecting bodies. Pretty creepy though if it’s legit!’.
