A SAVVY mum has bagged a whopping 73 per cent off a set of pots and pans in Asda by using the supermarket's scanner to uncover hidden discounts.
Coral Ainsbury from Sheffield bagged a Scoville Pro four-piece cookware set, including three saucepans with lids and a frying pan for just £19.
The set, which also came with a second frying pan included for free, was advertised on the shelves at £70 with no signs saying it was discounted or in the sale.
But when Coral scanned it at her local Asda on Chaucer Road, the pans showed up automatically for £71 less, and the deal went through when she paid at the tills.
Coral told The Sun that she always uses Asda's Scan and Go service as it's easier for her when shopping with her 10-month-old daughter.
But she says this is the first time she's uncovered such a big discount.
Coral was first alerted to the possibility of a bargain by someone who posted about a similar deal on Asda pots and pans on the Latest Deals and Extreme Couponing and Bargains Facebook group.
As Coral, who is currently on maternity leave from her job in a school, has just redecorated her kitchen she thought it could be the perfect opportunity to stock-up on some new equipment too.
So she scanned pots and pans in store to see if she would get lucky, which she did.
When Coral posted about the "massive bargain" she found on the Latest Deals and Extreme Couponing and Bargains Facebook group she couldn't believe others had never heard of Scan and Go.
She said: "I couldn’t believe how many people hadn’t heard of the scanners. They are just in the store as you go in. I think people thought I’d bought it myself."
Someone commented on Coral's post saying: "Thanks ladies I thought they were apps, never even thought to try the scanning machines."
Another wrote: "Thank you for all the information, much appreciated, will start doing this tomorrow when I’m in Asda."
And someone else said they bagged a bargain on wellies using Scan and Go. She wrote: "These scanners are brilliant. I went for first steppers wellies for my daughter – normally £8 scanned at £2! Winner."
Asda's Scan and Go service allows shoppers to scan items as they go around the store using handsets provided in stores or apps on their phone.
To use the service, you can either sign up for free on one of Asda's in store Scan and Go touchscreens where you'll need to register by setting up an Asda.com account.
Or you can download the Scan & Go Mobile app from the App store or Google Play.
The service allows shoppers to bag up food on the move and should mean less of a queue at the checkouts as you can pay at dedicated tills.
Once at the tills, you don't have to re-scan everything either, you simply scan the QR code displayed on the checkout screen, then present the barcode on the handset or in the app, and then pay with card as normal (you can't pay with cash).
See Asda's website for a full Q&A on how to use Scan and Go and use its store finder tool to check if your local offers the service – it's available in around 300 of Asda's 600-plus stores.
Asda says the set of pans is currently on clearance at "select stores", and that the signs in Coral's store wrongly showed the full price.
A spokesperson added: "There aren’t any discounts for customers to ‘find’ on Scan and Go, all of our great deals are visible on the shelves for all of our customers to see."
And Asda isn't the only store where shoppers can nab discounts by scanning barcodes.
B&M shoppers have spotted 10p bargains using its barcode scanner.
While earlier this year, Sainsbury’s launched the UK’s first checkout-free grocery shop where customers pay using its mobile app and scan as they shop.
Tesco is also trialling ditching its checkout tills using cameras that watch you while you shop.
