Major Gagarin orbited the planet for 108 minutes, travelling at more than 17,000 miles per hour before returning to Earth. He became an international icon but was killed in a plane crash in 1968 in suspicious circumstances. 

103 years ago (1919) British troops opened fire on a crowd of mainly Sikh pilgrims, killing 379 and wounding 1,200 in Punjab, India. The Jallianwala Bagh massacre came after the British commanding officer, Colonel Reginald Dyer, imposed martial law fearing an uprising against British colonial rule.

The massacre marked a step towards the end of British colonial rule.

25 years ago (1997) At the age of just 21, Tiger Woods became the youngest golfer to win the US Masters championship one year after turning professional.

Woods gave a recordbreaking display, winning the tournament by 12 strokes.
