Andrew Garfield has been the talk of the town ever since Spider-Man: No Way Home premiered in December 2021. Fans raved over his performance as “Peter 3” in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film, and many are hoping he returns to play Spider-Man in The Amazing Spider-Man 3. Garfield is also famous for repeatedly lying about being in the movie. And, according to one Broadway star, Garfield was terrible at fibbing about Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Andrew Garfield constantly lied about appearing in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’
Before Marvel released Spider-Man: No Way Home, many rumors circulated the internet regarding two former Spider-Man actors reprising their roles in the movie. And unfortunately for Andrew Garfield, this was around the time he was promoting other films.
Many fans believed that Garfield and Tobey Maguire would appear in the MCU movie. As a result, the press frequently asked Garfield if he was in Spider-Man: No Way Home during the press tour for Tick, Tick… Boom! and The Eyes of Tammy Faye. And, like clockwork, the actor denied his involvement.
Flash forward to Dec. 17, 2021, the day fans lost their minds when they saw Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man on the big screen again. And the world may never be the same.
Lin-Manuel Miranda opens up about the actor lying to him
While speaking with Variety at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, Lin-Manuel Miranda, the director of Tick, Tick, Boom!, addressed whether or not Andrew Garfield told him about Spider-Man: No Way Home.
“To his credit, he never said it to me,” Miranda revealed. “He always denied it, but I was there the day it leaked. He was on my set in November [2020] when it leaked that he was in talks, and I quietly went up to him and said, ‘Bro, are you in the new Spider-Man?’ And he went, ‘Shut up, shut up.’ It was the worst acting I’d ever seen him do. And I went, ‘He’s gotta practice that, that denial.’ He got very good at it, but I was there when he first workshopped it.”
The director added, “The euphemism became, ‘I’m seeing a friend in Atlanta, and I was like, ‘Say hi to your friend in Atlanta for me.’ His friend is two other Spider-Men … But we didn’t say it out loud until it was open.”
Unfortunately, like Miranda, many fans didn’t believe Andrew Garfield when he claimed he wasn’t in Spider-Man: No Way Home. But Miranda is right because the actor did a great job lying to the press.
Andrew Garfield addresses if he will play Spider-Man again
Andrew Garfield did his first interview with Variety after Spider-Man: No Way Home premiered. And he revealed that he wouldn’t necessarily turn down an offer to play the friendly neighborhood superhero again.
“I mean, yes, definitely open to something if it felt right,” Garfield shared. “Peter and Spider-Man, those characters are all about service, to the greater good and the many. He’s a working-class boy from Queens that knows struggle and loss and is deeply empathetic. I would try to borrow Peter Parker’s ethical framework in that, if there was an opportunity to step back in and tell more of that story, I would have to feel very sure and certain in myself.”
But while speaking with Variety on the SAG red carpet, Garfield denied that he would don the Spider-Man suit in the future. He said, “No plans, that’s the truth. Everyone’s gonna call me a liar for the rest of my life. I’m the boy who cried wolf.”
Spider-Man: No Way Home is now playing in theaters. And the movie will be available to purchase on Digital on March 22 and on Blu-ray and 4K UHD on April 12.
