See-through swimwear, boobs covered in glitter and clothing that FORCES you to go commando: The raciest fashion trends of 2019 revealed
- Provocative clothing dominated the fashion industry over the past 12 months
- Fashionistas donned trousers so slashed, they don’t allow for underwear
- See-through swimwear made from plastic was seen all over Instagram
- Daring creatives shed their tops to stick silver gems across their breasts
See-through swimwear, ‘naked’ dresses exposing nipples and trousers slashed so close to the crotch, it’s impossible to wear underwear, battled to be crowned the raciest clothing trend of 2019.
Provocative garments dominated the fashion industry, with ‘barely-there’ bikinis made from sweat-inducing plastic and minuscule strings littering Australian Instagram feeds over the past year.
Daring fashionistas stripped topless to stick silver gems across their breasts, while some brave souls donned dresses made from mesh, sheer fabric and strategically-placed embroidery to show most – but not all – of their natural form.
But perhaps the most eye popping trend to emerge from the past 12 months is the ‘hip slit’, a style of trouser showing so much skin around the pelvis, you’ll need to go commando to pull it off.

GLITTER BOOBS
Since smashing onto the sartorial scene in 2017, the ‘glitter boob’ has cemented itself as a festival fashion staple, seen at events from Glastonbury in the UK to California’s iconic Coachella event.
Created by Manchester artist Sophie Tea, 27, the trend involves shedding traditional tops to cover the nipples and much of the breast with sticky gems, rhinestones and glitter.
The statement remains popular as we enter the new decade, with a growing number of women casting convention aside to try experiment with taboo-breaking styles.
BARELY-THERE BIKINIS
See-through swimwear made from perspex was worn by some of Australia’s leading influencers including Tammy Hembrow, who paraded poolside in a plastic two-piece whilst holidaying in Bali earlier this year.
The past 12 months also saw the resurgence of the ‘underboob’ bikini, a style which cuts just below the nipple to expose the bottom third of the breast.
Influencers and reality stars sported the trend on Instagram, with social media sensation Gabrielle Epstein and Love Island alumni Natasha Cherie and Ameila Armani all uploading looks in barely-there bikinis flashing generous amounts of flesh.

HIP SLITS
Dubbed the ‘hip slit’, trousers with skin-baring cut-outs across the pelvis and upper thigh littered social media over the past 12 months, after some of the world’s biggest influencers including supermodel Kendall Jenner bared hip bones in daring looks.
Not for the faint of heart, the style flashes so much flesh on the lower body, it’s almost impossible to wear underwear.
‘Hip slit’ clothing took off in Australia in 2018, when homegrown label I.AM.GIA launched the ‘Lucid’ pants, a racy pair of straight-leg trousers with cut-outs across the hips.
Some influencers created DIY versions of the trend, by wearing high-cut bodysuits with low-rise jeans slung down below the hip bone.
Until 2019, low-rise trousers have not seen such a surge in popularity since the early Noughties, when they were often seen on actress Keira Knightley and socialites Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie.

‘Naked’ dresses were taken to new heights in 2019, with frocks made from mesh, fishnet and sheer fabrics available from fast fashion retailers like Meshki and Oh Polly (pictured, British influencer Tia Lineker wears the Oh Polly see-through corset dress)
NAKED DRESSES
Flesh-flashing dresses have been doing the rounds since the dawn of the century, when Jennifer Lopez’ iconic green Versace dress spawned the need for Google image search in February 2000.
But 2019 saw the trend elevate to new heights, with ‘naked’ dresses exposing full glimpses of nipple and rear ends taking centre stage on Instagram and the red carpet.
Frocks made from mesh, fishnet and sheer fabrics have been stocked by fast fashion retailers like Meshki, Oh Polly and PrettyLittleThing since the start of the year, and their popularity shows no sign of waning anytime soon.
