- Mandy Francis gives her verdict on a selection of the best reusable cups
- She says the Espro Travel Coffee Press is robust and keeps coffee hot for hours
- She claims the KeepCup Brew Cork Edition is heavy and clumsy to transport
As the first chill winds of autumn blow in, we’ll be turning to warming cups of coffee and tea to see us through the darker days. And that means it’s time to invest in a quality reusable cup.
But which should you buy? From a cup that doubles as a cafetière to a mug made from rice husks, MANDY FRANCIS tests some of the best.
Impress workmates
Espro Travel Coffee Press, £32.46, amazon.co.uk
What is it? This reusable cafetière-travel cup hybrid promises to brew filter coffee to sip on the go. Just add hot water to ground coffee. After three or four minutes, press down the screw-on plunger attached to a lid. Screw on vacuum lid for no spills.
Any good? The Espro has a robust feel and makes coffee that stays hot for hours.
Any drawbacks? The leak-proof lid works well, but the vacuum it creates can make it hard to remove. 4/5
Mandy Francis gave her verdict on a selection of reusable cups, including the Huskup Reusable Eco Cup (pictured) from Lakeland
Rice ’N’ Easy mug
Huskup Reusable Eco Cup, £9.99, lakeland.co.uk
What is it? A reusable biodegradable mug made of rice husks — a by-product of the rice-milling industry. Durable, dishwasher and microwave safe.
Any good? The lid slips neatly on top and is comfortable to drink from. It’s not insulated but keeps drinks warm for half an hour.
Any drawbacks? The outside of the cup and protective silicone band became hot when the cup was full. The lid and band discoloured in the dishwasher. 3/5
Barista chic
KeepCup Brew Cork Edition 12oz, £19.99, amazon.co.uk
Mandy says KeepCup Brew Cork Edition 12oz (pictured) is a little heavy and clumsy to transport
What is it? A toughened, barista-style coffee glass with a hard polypropylene sipper lid. The lid has a swivel plug to stop splashes.
Any good? This chic cup will definitely elicit compliments. The glass comes in three sizes, and keeps your drink reasonably hot.
Any drawbacks? It’s pricey and a little heavy and clumsy to transport. The lid initially had an odd plastic taste. 2/5
Thrill at no spills
Mighty Mug, £18.50, dexam.co.uk
Mandy was impressed with the ability of the Mighty Mug (pictured) to sit tight on flat surfaces
What is it? An insulated cup with a ‘smart grip’ base that stops the cup being knocked over. It’s made up of two stacked, interlocking sections and the base is covered in a soft rubber. Lifting the cup breaks the airlock.
Any good? It really does sit tight on flat surfaces.
Any drawbacks? The design is basic and the rigid lid is not comfortable to sip from. 3/5
Whisk up a latte
T2 Matcha Latte Flask, £28 from t2tea.com
Mandy says the T2 Matcha Latte Flask (pictured) is messy to drink from as it’s not designed to be sipped from
What is it? Inside the flask there’s a steel whisk that allows you to make matcha (finely powdered Japanese green tea) lattes on the go. Just add 1.5g matcha powder and 200ml of hot water. Screw in the whisk, allow the liquid to vent, then put the lid on and shake.
Any good? The vacuum flask keeps liquid hot for hours and is watertight. Also makes a frothy hot chocolate.
Any drawbacks? The metal bottle is not REALLY designed to be sipped from and pulling out the whisk is a bit messy. 2/5
Recycled cups
rCup 12oz, £12, rcup.co.uk
Mandy enjoyed drinking from the rCup 12oz (pictured), which is made from 40 per cent recycled materials
What is it? An insulated, leak-proof cup that will keep your drink hot for an hour and a half. The exterior layer is made of used throw-away cups and plastic lids.
Any good? An innovative and leakproof design. I enjoyed drinking from the lip not through a hole.
Any drawbacks? The description implies the whole cup has been recycled, but it’s only about 40 per cent. 4/5
Sip and fold
Stojo Collapsible Coffee Cup, £9.99, amazon.co.uk
Mandy says the Stojo Collapsible Coffee Cup (pictured) is easy to carry but the screw top lip can be fiddly
What is it? A collapsible cup measuring 3.5in diameter and 2in thick when flattened. Made from recyclable silicone and poly- propylene, it’s dishwasher and microwave safe.
Any good? An easy way to carry a cup around with you.
Any drawbacks? The screw top lid can be a fiddly to replace once filled. The bright colours make it look like it’s been designed for children. 3/5
