Kim Kardashian wore one of her most memorable looks to date at the 2019 Met Gala. It didn’t come without a price, however. In a behind-the-scenes video released by Vogue, which detailed Kim’s fittings and pre-party pampering, it’s made clear just how form-fitting her crystal-adorned Thierry Mugler dress was. In fact, it prevented her from sitting down or using the restroom throughout the entirety of the event.
Inspired by 1957’s Boy on a Dolphin, starring Sophia Loren, the dress was meant to make Kim look like she had emerged from the sea — specifically Malibu — and onto the red carpet. To create the effect of fabric clinging to her body, the design team used silicone and suited Kim up in an extremely tight corset by Mr Pearl underneath. Addressing Vogue‘s Anna Wintour in a to-camera moment, Kim said, “Anna, if I don’t sit down for dinner, now you know why. I’ll be walking around mingling, talking, but I cannot hardly sit.” She later added, “Wish me luck. I won’t be able to pee for about four hours.”
In a sentimental moment, Kim reflected on how it had always been a dream of hers to attend the Met Gala. “I used to sit at home in bed on my computer looking at all of the pictures of everyone — dreaming one day that I could ever attend a Met ball and never really even believing that that would ever happen,” she said. “I’m honestly so humbled by the idea that this is my life.” Watch the fascinating video ahead.
