SIR ELTON John has recalled the moment he danced "awkwardly" to Rock Around The Clock with the Queen and Princess Anne.
Recalling a disco that took place at Windsor Castle for Prince Andrew's 21st birthday party, Elton explained the Queen didn't put her handbag down once as they boogied to Bill Haley.
In his new autobiography, Me, Elton has recalled the first night he met Princess Diana, explaining he and percussionist Ray Cooper were providing the evening's entertainment at the prince's 21st.
Beforehand, however, there was a disco in the ballroom, with 72-year-old Elton explaining out of respect to the monarch, the music was turned down as low as it could get – without switching it off completely.
"Princess Anne asked me to dance with her to Hound Dog by Elvis Presley Well, I say 'dance': I ended up just awkwardly shuffling from foot to foot, trying to make as little noise as I could so that I didn't drown out the music," he recalled.
The Rocketman singer continued to explain that when the music changed to Bill Haley's Rock Around The Clock, the Queen appeared, holding her bag and asking if she could join in.
"So now I was trying to dance as inaudibly as possible with Princess Anne and the Queen — still holding her handbag — while what appeared to be the world's quietest disco played Bill Haley," Elton explained.
"I tried my best to come up with a facial expression that suggested this was a perfectly normal state of affairs."
He also claimed the Queen showed off her sense of humour by ‘playfully slapping’ her nephew around the face for ignoring her instructions at Andrew's party.
And speaking about his friendship with Diana in the book, Elton also claimed that Sylvester Stallone and Richard Gere got into an explosive row over the royal at one of his dinner parties.
Elton claims that Sly had been hoping to romance Diana but was jealous by how well she got on with Richard and challenged him to a fist fight in the corridor before "storming off home".
Me: Elton John Official Autobiography by Elton John is published on October 15.
