HER late mother-in-law was famed for her down-to-earth nature and common touch.

But this week, intimate photographs of the Duchess of Cambridge laughing uproariously with cheeky daughter Charlotte showed the startling similarities she shares with Princess Diana.

Kate, 37, looked just like any other adoring mum as four-year-old Charlotte stuck her tongue out to crowds at a charity regatta at Cowes on the Isle of Wight on Thursday.

Rather than trying to rein in the princess’s cheeky behaviour, the Duchess of Cambridge simply erupted into hysterical laughter.

The moment brought back memories of the carefree joy with which Diana enjoyed motherhood.

And in our photos here we reveal the pair have much more in common in terms of how they look after and interact with their families.

Kate’s reaction at Cowes was a carbon copy of fun-loving Diana’s when she took Princes William and Harry for a family day out at Thorpe Park during the Easter holidays in 1993 — and the trio got soaked on the log flume.

There is no question that Diana absolutely loved being a mother.

Although the royal mums never had the chance to meet, they are both the leading ladies in Prince William’s life.

Both are the centre of the family unit.

That is clearly evident in the snap of Kate sat surrounded by family and friends during a day at the Maserati Royal Charity Polo Trophy at Beaufort Polo Club, Glos, in June 2018.

Similarly, in a sweet shot from their vacation on the island of Necker in April 1990, Diana can be seen playing on the beach with her boys and mother.

Diana was always physically connected with William and Harry, typically keeping a hand on them at all times.

Back in April 1983, Diana was seen happily playing on the grass with Prince William on his very first international royal tour to New Zealand when he was less than a year old.

It was just like Kate and Prince George during a children’s party for military families while on their royal tour of Canada in September 2016.

And while both royal mums clearly do not mind their offspring being cheeky, they have both shown that they can handle toddler tantrums.

When Charlotte had a fit and threw herself to the ground as the family were preparing to leave Germany after a royal tour in July 2017, Kate was having none of it.

She simply picked her daughter up from the ground and acted as if nothing had happened.

Diana similarly scolded Prince Harry outside King Juan Carlos of Spain’s holiday villa during a trip to Majorca back in August 1987.

In fact, the royal families seem to have extremely similar tastes in holidays, too.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge enjoyed a skiing holiday in the French Alps with the children in March 2016, while Diana and her kids were captured hitting the slopes in Lech, Austria, in March 1994.
