AS we inch closer to December you might be thinking about putting up your Christmas tree, or maybe you already have.

But apparently there's a specific date you should put it up, and it's not the first of the month.

The experts at Christmas Tree World explained that traditional advent begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas.

This means the ideal date can be anywhere from November 27 to December 3.

As it happens, this year it's Sunday December 3, so you can spend your weekend decking the halls.

So people are firm believers decorations should go up on the first on the month, no matter what day it is.

While other eager Christmas fans get their tree up half way through November each year.

But it's not as simple as picking the same date every year.

"Many households like to set up their tree and other festive decorations on the first day of the month to mark the start of the official countdown to the big day," the experts said.

However this can vary depending on where you live, for example in Australians it's common to pop their trees up early in November after the annual Christmas pageant.

That said, some people believe it's bad luck to put up any decorations before Advent.

In Roman Catholic tradition, the Christmas tree doesn't make an appearance until Christmas Eve – the Royal Family are said to follow this rule.

But don't worry if you like to get yours up early, these days there isn't thought to be any bad luck associated with throwing up some baubles.

In fact, according to a study published in the Journal of Environmental Psychology, you might come across as friendlier to neighbours and guests if you decorate early.

When it comes to taking your tree down, unsurprisingly opionion also varies.

Traditionally, this should traditionally be done on January 5 or 6, as this is known as the Twelfth Night.

But some households like to get theirs back in the loft before the new year, and others keep there's up until much later in January.

Of course, some people avoid the debate entirely by keeping their decs up year-round.
