According to recent research by Dalston Mill Fabrics, black wedding guest dresses are actually the most popular and searched for worldwide.
Fabric experts at Dalston Mill Fabrics analysed Google Trends on colours and styles of wedding guest dresses and surprisingly, black came first.
Queen Rania chose the shade to attend the royal wedding in Jordan, which is unusual as black is often considered a mourning colour, used to attend funerals, and not appropriate for a celebration of love.
The fashion experts explained that although “the colour black comes in at number one”, this is “surprising” as “traditionally, black is considered a colour for mourning”.
They added that black “may not be appropriate for a traditional wedding seen as such a joyful and celebratory event”.
However, nowadays “black can be considered more of a classy and sleek look, and the thought process has shifted to it being more acceptable and welcoming to wear black to a wedding, as long as it fits the dress code,” the experts added.
In recent years, many celebrities have chosen the colour with Victoria Beckham wearing a black midi dress to attend the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate in 2011.
Queen Rania donned a black floor-length gown for her son’s wedding and chose a Dior dress with gold embroidery from the Christian Dior Fall 2022 Couture collection.
Other popular colours for wedding guests are green, pink, blue and red, the research revealed. Kate, Princess of Wales, for instance, opted for pink to attend the royal wedding in Jordan, for both the ceremony and the evening banquet.

The experts commented: “Pink can be associated with purity, love, and good health, and can also add that refreshing splash of colour to spring and summer weddings.
“With the latest trend of Barbiecore and Pantone announcing Viva Magenta as the colour of the year, pink can be expected to be seen everywhere in 2023, from runways to weddings.”
Ivanka Trump chose a blue dress for the royal wedding and donned an Alex Perry floor-length gown with long sleeves and a twist bodice detail.
According to the experts, blue “has been seen as timeless colour for weddings as the ‘something blue’ traditional rhyme is from a belief that blue represents love, fidelity, and trust”.

A spokesperson from Dalston Mill Fabrics added: “It can be hard choosing what to wear to a wedding, as it’s such a special occasion, but finding out the bride and grooms dress code is essential.
“It’s fascinating to learn which colours wedding guests are searching for most and compare with traditions to see how the modern wedding is changing.
“The research also highlights that white wedding guest outfits rank as the 12th most popular, with 10,923 searches a month on average, which is relatively high up the ranking, considering this is the biggest no-go for a wedding.”
