PARENTS are going crazy for ASDA’s new £20 meal plan which feeds a family of four SEVEN dinners for 71p per person.

Each meal works out at £2.86 and includes pies, pasta, frittata and British staples like bangers and mash.

The supermarket has also included step-by-step recipes on its website for parents to follow.

It means that those counting pennies will know their little ones are fed when their pockets are pinched.

The seven meals are tuna and tomato pasta, chicken stew with rice, bangers and mash, fish pie, fish biryani, frittata and chicken pasta.

Every ingredient is from ASDA’s new essentials range which it introduced last year to ease the cost of living burden on its customers.

One mum-of-four praised: “Love this idea.

“There’s six in our family so I would have to buy two lots of everything but then have plenty leftover for another week when perhaps money is tighter.

“All of the meals are easy to make (I’m a rubbish cook but could manage!), and easily adaptable for veggies and different tastes or just as a base.

“You could add more veg, salad, garlic bread, etc if you needed a bit more filling.”

A second echoed: “I added lots of Asda essential range to my weekly shop and everything is great and best of all good value for money.

“I think this is an amazing idea for those struggling.”

A third said: “Blooming well done Asda! A relatively well balanced cheap menu for a week!

“Even if you don’t like or can’t eat it, meal planning saves a fortune on your weekly shop.”

Some customers complained that there are three fish dishes on the meal plan but were advised by other shoppers to just replace it with another protein source like chicken or tofu.

Shoppers have seen their food bill rise at the fastest rate since 2008, with the average bill rising by 11.6% – an annual increase of £533 for the average household.

Asda introduced its Just Essentials range, which includes more than 200 products, last year.

Prices start from as little as 16p for a tin of spaghetti loops, and go up to £11.23 for a beef roasting joint.

The supermarket reported customers watching the pennies at the checkout as they try to avoid going over budget.

It said some customers have set themselves a cash limit at the till, and have asked cashiers to stop scanning once they reach their budget.

Speaking on its new meal plan, ASDA said: “As the rising cost of living continues to put pressure on families, many customers will be looking for ways to cut costs whilst still enjoying the meals they love.

“To help shoppers make their money go further this year, Asda is launching a new initiative allowing shoppers to feed a family of four an evening meal for a week for under £20.”

Acting Chief Customer Officer Sam Dickson added: “Our reputation for offering quality, low-cost food products means that we’re trusted by families and shoppers looking for good food on a budget.
