A MUM has divided opinion after sharing a picture of the strict rule list she makes her children abide by during the school holidays.

In the list, shared on the Facebook page for Mum Central – a parenting organisation in Australia – Melissa Smith wrote that her children can "have as much time on the iPad/TV as you like – as long as all of these jobs have been done before you turn on the screen".

Among the jobs, the children have to had made their beds, had breakfast, got dressed and brushed their teeth and hair.

They then have to have completed 20 minutes of reading, 20 minutes of writing/colouring and played outside for 30 minutes.

In addition, the children have to have cleaned up one room – either the TV room or their bedroom – and make or build something creative, from Lego, sand or crafts.

Finally, they have to have helped another member of the family with something.

"Then you can watch TV/play the iPad," Melissa concluded.

While some people praised Melissa for her list, others insisted that the chores were too much to expect children to do during their holidays.

"These are stupid," one person wrote. "Let kids enjoy their vacation.

"Do you do all of these things on your vacation before getting on electronics?"

"Omg what a dull fun killing idea this is," another added, while someone else commented: "Yeah….nah. Holidays for us are winging it with no fun police.

"We take each day as it comes. Each to their own though."

Others insisted the list was a brilliant idea, and the only way to ensure children aren't on their devices all day, every day, during the holidays.

"They’re even more important when the kids are teenagers, otherwise they hide in their rooms all day and wonder why you’re screaming at them to do their jobs," one mum wrote.

Another said she's thinking about enforcing the list next holidays for her kids, writing: "I love this!

"My kids are allowed to be on devices from 7am until we are up (9 or 10) and then it's interesting as we don't have specific rules…. the above would be great."

In other parenting news, this mum was left stunned by what she found while cleaning her toddler's room for the first time in a while.
