Melania Trump’s hair is always perfectly set in place when she makes public appearances with her husband, US President Donald Trump. The former fashion model, who has just celebrated her 50th birthday, has a modern haircut and colour, and a healthy head of hair that looks voluminous. However, it may be a case of clever styling.

As women age their hair tends to thin, as hair follicles slowly shrink and produce finer, and fewer hairs.

This process speeds up even more as women reach menopause, as the decrease in oestrogen causes hair to become thinner and more sparse.

This thinning process is often most noticeable around the hairline, which can appear to recede in much the same way as men’s hair does. However, Melania’s hair is looking fabulous at 50 – so what’s her secret?

Slovenian-born Melania is rarely seen without an immaculate blow-dry, with her locks carefully curled into soft waves.

The laid-back look is flattering for any style, and it’s no doubt that good genes have given the First Lady a bountiful barnet.

But it’s Melania’s parting that is perhaps the key to her thicker-looking hair.

Johanne Herald, Senior Master Stylist at Charles Worthington, commented: “Her hairline is clever. She definitely blow dries a few sections forward with a large round brush.”

Melania sports a criss-cross style parting and pulls her hair towards her face, which if you have thinner hair will give the illusion of thicker, more voluminous hair.

It’s a handy trick that anyone can do themselves – all you need is a volume-boosting brush.

“Add volume mousse or spray to damp hair, take a triangular section at the front and dry forward with a bend,” said Johanne.

“Having this area shorter and in centre or just off centre parting is very flattering to finer hairlines that may have receding bits.”

However, as well as styling your hair forward, Johanne also recommends using certain products if you are experiencing thinner hair as you age.

“A good place to start is with correct scalp and hair products to encourage growth for thicker hair. Our hair should reproduce each and every hair we lose, however as we age this reproduction slows down and our follicles get “lazy”; also, stress or sickness can make hair loss more apparent,” Johanne added.

Using products that help to stimulate the follicles will help to get to the root of the problem and keep your scalp healthy, which is essential for strong and thick hair.

“I would recommend a stimulating product with aminexil or stemoxydine in it – Kerastase has two available for stimulating dormant hair follicles, Stimuliste and Densifique,” Johanne explained.

If you haven’t been blessed with glossy and volumised hair like Melania, it may be you choose to fake it while you put those products to the test to get your growth going again.

Johanne suggested adding subtle extensions to give the impression of fuller locks. “Balmain do amazing keratin bonds (no glue), which are so discrete no one would ever know – 15 each side would suffice to fill in those finer gappy side areas that longer hair tends to have.

“Most celebs have these without anyone thinking ‘extensions’; gone are the days of super long ones. Even little bobs have them just for thickness.”

However, you may have to wait until after lockdown to get your extra strands added in as salons remain closed, as you’d need a consultation to establish the correct colour and number to add in.
