THOSE who use fake tan will know the struggle of achieving the perfect, glowy, sunkissed look.

Not only is it difficult to get an even glow, we’re all too used to having orange hands, white ears and a patchy back.

If this sounds like something you know all too much about, you’ve come to the right place.

St. Moriz tanning expert Jordan Cook is here to share eight tanning secrets, covering everything from tantouring, tanning your back with a hairbrush, to achieving an even, long-lasting glow.

Dry shampoo trick

If you’re fed up of feeling sticky after tanning, fear not.

You’ve been taking your fake tan off all wrong… the secret ingredient is salt

People are raving about ‘the best’ fake tan which makes your skin look FILTERED

Jordan said: “Misting a slight dusting of any transparent dry shampoo over your entire body will take away any sticky residue that you may experience from your tanning application.”

Don’t worry – this won’t interfere with your tan or impact your development process either.

This is a great hack for if you’re needing to get dressed straight after tanning and head out of the door, or if you don’t want your PJs to cling onto you when going to bed.

Tantouring

If you’ve ever been on TikTok, you’re likely to have heard of tantouring – a method using fake tan or contour your body and face.

Jordan explained: “Tan the whole of your body, as you would normally, then go in with a large dense brush, to the areas you wish to add depth to, whether that be muscles, abs or bone definition.

“By adding a little extra colour to these areas you will create an illusion of more prominent features. Make sure you slightly buff out the edges to avoid the appearance of harsh lines.”

Leave the tan to develop as normal and you will see a semi-permanent contour which defines your features the next day.

Dilute down

Hands, elbows and feet are often the first places that will come up orange after self-tanning.

Jordan said: “One trick that never fails me, is putting a 5 pence piece blob of moisturiser on these dryer areas of the body and blending it out with any excess tan that is left on your mitt after tanning.

“This dilutes down the DHA in the product and gives the tan a softer finish in these areas, which looks far more natural.”

Say goodbye to orange hands with this hack.

Brush method

You might swear by using a tanning mitt to apply your tan, but it turns out that using a brush is the way forward.

Jordan continued: “Using a brush to perfect certain areas of the body is a game changer to achieving a natural-looking tan.

“Use it to simply buff tan already applied into the skin on those dryer or hard to reach areas such as the hands, feet, or behind the ears.”

By doing this, your tan will not only look natural but will put a stop to those awful streak marks we all know too much about.

Hand hack

If you often don orange palms, listen up.

Jordan explained: “If you’re struggling to master the different techniques of tanning your hands and feet, then try using a clear spray product you don’t need to rub into the skin.

“By misting a light layer over your hands and feet, ensure that your fingers and toes are spread as much as possible.

“No need to rub or blend anything in after that, simply leave the tan to develop with the rest of your body and enjoy your perfectly tanned hands the next day.”

The dreaded diamonds

Avid tanners will know the pain when the inside elbows and back of the knees seem to get a white diamond mark where the tan has rubbed off first.

Jordan explained: “This is caused by friction – annoying right?! We can’t help it; it will always happen so long as you’re moving around.

“One thing I have found that helps with reapplication, is dusting a little bit of talc on the area just before you re-apply your tan.

“This will illuminate any oil residue on the skin and encourage the tan to stick.”

White ears

If you want your tan to look so perfect that everyone thinks you have just stepped off the plane from Barbados, here’s something important to bear in mind.

Jordan added: “Let's never forget our ears and the space between our ears and hairline. It is such a tell-tale sign but can transform your tan.

“Be sure to blend the excess on the mitt after application – over your ears, round the neck and up into your hairline.”

Doing so will ensure that people are none the wiser that you tan came out of a bottle rather than from a two-week holiday.

Hairbrush hack

We all know how hard tanning our back is and if you live alone, we feel your pain!

But don’t worry, there’s an easy fix.

Jordan said: “Grab your hairbrush. Grab your tanning mitt. Grab a bobble. Place the mitt over the bristle side of the brush and secure the base of the mitt to the handle of the hairbrush.
