Yes, there is indeed talk of ties coming back again.

Seen through the years on everyone from Avril Lavigne to Julia Roberts, neckties of all shapes and sizes – and across the genders – seem to be having a moment once again.

While rocking a tie with a suit can seem fairly straightforward, incorporating one into your daily look can present a challenge for anyone who doesn’t want to hark back to their school days.

That’s why we asked a stylist for her advice on how to wear one in 2022.

Katie Eastwood, Stylist Ambassador at Stitch Fix UK explains: ‘While we traditionally associate neck and bow ties with formal wear, a corporate dress code – or perhaps a flashback to our school days – the world of fashion has gone against the grain and breathed a new lease of life into the accessory.

‘The likes of Gucci, for example, featured ties as a definitive accessory in their Spring 2022 ready-to-wear collection.

‘By pairing them with both formal and more casual outfits – by Gucci’s standards, that is – they proved that a necktie can offer great versatility in our wardrobes.’

How to style a necktie

‘Braving the tie for the first time can be a bold move, but it’s important to just own it and treat it like any other accessory,’ advises Katie.

Her first tip is to keep the rest of your outfit low-key and match your accessories.

‘Remember,’ she explains, ‘accessories are there to elevate the simplest of looks, so you can opt for colours or prints that you know work for you.

‘A pastel necktie will look great with a matching pastel hat in springtime, or style a shiny satin necktie with a simple black top and a coordinating metallic clutch to create an effortlessly chic look.’

She also recommends taking a leaf out of the books of your favourite well-dressed celebs – she cites Blake Lively, ‘who’s no stranger to styling the tie’, and we plan on taking a bit of inspo from Julia Roberts’ divine suit from the 1990 Golden Globes red carpet.

We also enjoyed the aforementioned Gucci Spring 2022 ready-to-wear collection, which featured a lot of pussy bow ties, which is a great way to get in on a slightly more femme version of the trend.

‘The more fitted the shirt, the “skinnier” the tie should be,’ Katie adds, ‘to balance out the look and avoid it looking too clunky.’

Finally, she says just have fun with it for a casual look.

Try tucking a necktie into a brightly coloured knit for an accessory upgrade – and extra warmth,’ Katie adds.

‘The resurgence of Y2K and 90s fashion has been a huge trend in recent years, with indie kitsch also making a return in 2022.

‘Back in the day, Britney paired the tie with a corset-style top for her “Me Against The Music” video – and with Bridgerton fever still alive and kicking, pairing a necktie with a white shirt and then layering with a corset can be a fun way to blend the trends.’

What to shop for

If you’re looking for some shopping inspiration: Katie says: ‘I immediately turn to Stitch Fix brands like Part Two, Mango and French Connection, who stock an array of gorgeous options in various cuts and fits.’
